"True Love is the Devil's Crowbar"

WRITTEN AUGUST 24, 2009:

I thought I would type out some of the music events that I have gone to within the last year. I remember liking the Smashing Pumpkins but I never bought any of their albums. I don't know how many times I picked up Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and then putting it back. After high school, I sort of disregarded SP until Mike brought them to my attention again. It was like an epiphany. Why did I ignore this band? It was probably because they got so much airplay of the same songs on the radio. I gave Adore a good listen. Fucking amazing album. Totally underrated. That one seemed to go out with a wimper at the time when it came out because I don't remember any singles besides "Ava Adore."

Last November , Mike, Kim and I went to UC San Diego to see the Smashing Pumpkins. I felt extremely guilty for giving Mike shitty directions that I found on Yahoo Maps. We drove around on this winding, hilly area in the dark, thick, fog. We had no f-ing clue where the hell we were. Fortunately, Kim had a blackberry and found us the place. It was almost out of a horror movie. I had fun at the show but the crowd was really weird. There were a bunch of bros there. One of them was such an asshole that he kept pissing everyone off and was going to get his ass kicked by this older bro. Billy played an eclectic set. He was really nice. I thought he was going to be a jerk. Speaking of jerks, I thought Danzig was going to be a jerk too, but he was really cool! I saw him in February at the OC Fairgrounds for Musink with Joel and Yvette. Danzig kept handing out towels and water to everyone during his set. He's got great stage presence. The man can sure belt it out. Although, I thought it was really weird how his crew kept telling people not to take pictures yet all these girls kept doing it.

Going back to December, I finally saw the Pretenders with Sarah! I love Chrissie! I thought everyone would love her too but the crowd at the Nokia Live place sucked ass! I couldn't figure out why all those kids were there. They were such wet blankets. I think they were there to see the other bands like Bloc Party, Black Kids, and CSS. Then again, the kids sucked as an audience during their performances too. They just stood there. Granted, it was a Wednesday and they're probably tired from work .No, they can't be tired from work because they probably don't work and they were on winter break! No excuse for being a zombie when you're suppose to be rocking out! Then again maybe that's the thing with the kids nowadays, just be stoic at shows. LAME! I just saw X at the OC Fair in July and there were kids around me who freakin' sat through the show and left early! YOU DO NOT SIT WHILE WATCHING X PLAY NOR LEAVE EARLY! SINNERS! What's wrong with these people? Why do they even show their faces to these events? Just stay home! I got a sense that the people around me were annoyed with Chrissie's comments. Me? I was laughing my ass off. She's hilarious! One minute she's bragging about how good she looks and how people should be taking her picture. The next minute she's calling them a stalker. The bummer about the show was that the sound quality for them was not great. They needed to turn up the PA system. As for the other bands, they were ok. I really enjoyed CSS. They played after the Pretenders. They were really entertaining the whole way through. They had great energy. Lovefoxx is really fun to watch. She's all over the stage and her outfit was out there. She had on a African printed leotard jumpsuit. She came out with a big, feathery Brazialian headdress.

In April, I felt so lucky to have scored a ticket to go see Exene and John Doe perform acoustically at the Getty Museum. They were free so they were gone pretty fast. Fortunately Mike had a plan to get some tickets. Kim, Mike and I met up with Ashlee and Dan. They were with Eric and his girlfriend. It was so weird to see Exene and John Doe at a place like the Getty. There was no pot smoke, no crowd surfing, everyone was in a seat, and everyone looked dressed up. Weird. I thought that would have been a once in lifetime opportunity to see them play acoustically, but they are now doing an acoustic tour. Planning on seeing them at the Echo Plex, October 9. Hopefully, i can afford to go.

Another shitty crowd was the Jay Reatard crowd at the Echo. Saw him in June. When I saw him 2 years ago at the Scene in Glendale, the crowd was fun. Ran into Ashlee, Christine, and Kevin. KEVIN! It's really weird that I keep running into this guy all of the time over the last 7 or 8 years. This guy really lives for rock 'n' roll. Back to the Jay Reatard show at the Echo. I saw him in June with Steve and Mike. The crowd just stood there except for the guy next to me who was the only one moving to the music. The Oh Sees were great. I fell in love with the mod, tattooed guitar player with black framed glasses and the Fred Perry messenger bag. We probably would have been looking a little too similiar if I had not left my flight bag in the car. When Jay played, the sound was horrible. I figured that I should move because I was standing stage left and was not getting any vocals, instead was getting blown out guitar. I moved to the front and the sound was much better. Too bad Mike didn't follow my texts to move over to where I was or he would have been a happy camper that night.

In May, a shitload of us went to see the Spits play at Mr.T's in Highland Park. Let's see if I can remember who went: Melissa, Jon, Mike, Veronika, 2 of Jon's friends, and Pockets.
I ran into Kevin toward the end of the night. Spits were fun as usual. Saw King Khan walking around. That was a good crowd! Most people danced their ass off. I found all this great stuff on the floor including a girl's lost credit card (I found her at the end of the night frantically searching for fallen goods). I got Jon curious about this potato taco place that Dan introduced Mike and I to so the whole night Jon and I were talking about potato tacos. We must have annoyed everyone while we were chit chatting and passing around this huge bottle of rum in the parking lot. Potato tacos were a hit! Ran into Scott at the potato taco joint that night which is weird because I first saw the Spits with Scott and Mike at a wherehouse in downtown LA on 6th street maybe 2 years ago. Scott bought us dinner at Fred 62's that night, awww, how sweet. I must seem like a starstruck teenager everytime I see Scott. I can't help it. He reminds me of Paul Weller.

In July, Ashlee, Max, Mike , and I met up at the Juke Joint in Anaheim for Christine's Birthday. Beat Man and Blues Trash Trio played. Ran into Kevin. Made plans to hang out with Kevin at the OC Fair X show. Ran into Christina. I was happy to have seen Christina. It had been awhile since I last saw her. Most of us were a little tired of the monotonous sound of the bands so we left Ashlee there. We went back to get her when we got something to eat.

I went with LeAnna to go see X at the Fair. I ran into Fabi! It was so weird that she was sitting a few rows right behind me. As I was leaving after the show, I heard my name being called. Fabi is a friend from college during my rockabilly phase. I never had a class with her. I would always see her at the rockabilly shows that they would have on campus. Finally, we somehow started talking. I must have seemed like a stuck up bitch in college because I was not open and very reserved. I've had bad experiences trying to talk to people. A lot of the times they just end up being assholes so I usually won't make an effort to break the ice. Anyhow, Fabi plays stand up bass for Cattie Ness and the Revenge. She's amazing! I still remember when she was just started out playing bass. She was so determined. I recently read that Billy Lee Riley died. I remember going to the Los Angeles theatre with Fabi to see Kim Lenz and Billy Lee Riley. The Los Angeles Theatre is amazing. I love architecture. I hope I can go back to that place soon. The bathroom is gigantic and fancy. It's just too bad the place wasn't restored.

After the X show, Kevin found us. I gave a speech when LeAnna pointed out that I knew every lyric to every song. I pointed out that instead of having a boyfriend, I poured all my efforts into a relationship with X and music. It would never hurt or disappoint me. Kevin and I totally related on that. We can't relate to people so we've found something else to relate to.From what I know, he's been single too. It's not so bad. Oh, rock 'n' roll, you've been so good to us.

LeAnna intoduced Kevin and me to her friends. They were such lovely people. Donna, Jack, Dia, and Greg. Huge X fans. Donna showed us her pictures with Exene and John Doe backstage. Jack and Donna are a married couple who are really into their Irish heritage. I know their teen daughter, Caitlin. She's so cute. Jack totally reminds me of Ted Kennedy. Kevin and I totally agreed that they were super cool. Dia was telling us stories about how she cut her hair like Cyndi Lauper's when she was a teen and how badly she wants to hump Prince. After the fair, we went over to a bar in Huntington Beach. We were all hoping to catch Exene at Gallagher's because Greg owns it. A sound guy for X works there. Last time Exene was in town, she stopped by Gallagher's to say hello to him. Jack bought us beers as we waited for Exene. She didn't show up. However, the sound guy played a few X songs on the jukebox and I was content.
