Two of my favorite bands broke up last week - Copeland and Armor for Sleep. AFS wasn't as much as a surprise for me because I heard rumors about this months earlier, but I was really surprised/upset about Copeland. They have always been a favorite band, but I started to get in to them a lot more recently after they released You Are My Sunshine and I thought they were going really strong. For my recommendations this week, I'm going to have downloads for Copeland and Armor for Sleep. I'm going to write about Copeland today and do an entry on Armor for Sleep tomorrow.
Copeland was an indie rock band from Florida. They have a soft and pretty sound (similar to Lydia, Deas Vail and Mae).
Their first album, Beneath Medicine Tree, is one of my favorites by them. It has a lot of my favorite songs by them on it such as "When Paula Sparks". The album was inspired by the hospitialization of the lead singer's girlfriend and the death of his grandmother and is very themed around pain and healing.
Download Their next album, In Motion, is more rock-ish and upbeat compared to their other albums. They started to go a little more mainstream here and even though it's not my favorite album by them, it was the first album I heard by them so it holds a lot of memories. I love “Kite” and “You Have My Attention”.
Download Eat, Sleep, Repeat is their 3rd release. One thing I like about this album is they started adding female vocals in the background (by Rae Cassidy) in songs such as "When You Thought You'd Never Stand Out" which I think make the best Copeland songs.
Download Like I mentioned above, I think You Are My Sunshine is probably my favorite and I started to get in to Copeland more after hearing it. I think they really captured the best of their sound here (just listen to the chorus of "On The Safest Ledge").
Download If you just want to try a few songs by them, here's some I had uploaded:
