One of my favorite bands, Mae, decided to go on hiatus this year. I saw them on their Farewell Tour in Chicago on October 27th. This was actually the third farewell tour I went to this year (the others were Copeland and Lydia) so it's kind of sad to see another band from this genre/scene go. Mae is a band from Virginia that formed in 2001. They have a sort of soft rock sound that's kind of similar to Copeland, Deas Vail and Waking Ashland.
There were two opening bands - Windsor Drive and Terrible Things. I hadn't heard of Windsor Drive, but I really liked their sound and the focus on keyboards in their music.
Terrible Things also opened who's band members are former members of Hot Rod Circuit, Taking Back Sunday, and Coheed and Cambria. I was excited to see Fred Mascherino live (from Taking Back Sunday/The Color Fred) and I thought their set was good. I'd recommend checking out their new album.
Mae came on next. This was my second time seeing them live except this time they played with their original lineup (which included two members that left a few years ago). Mae played mostly songs from their first two albums and a couple from later releases. They opened with their most recent song release, "Bloom". Some highlights for me were "Giving it Away", "Breakdown" and "Soundtrack for Our Movie".
They invited a couple onstage during the show who got proposed. Some couple got proposed at the last Mae concert I went to. I don't know if that happens a lot during Mae concerts, but I thought it was cute. The couple danced on stage as Mae played "The Ocean".
Overall, the concert was really fun, but bittersweet. If you want to hear Mae, here's some of their albums:
