Letter to NBC Executives

Dec 22, 2011 17:02

This is a copy of the letter that I'm sending out to all of the NBC Exectives to encourage them to renew Community for a 4th season.  Let me know what you think!

Dear Mr. Greenblatt:

I am writing to you regarding your wonderful show, Community.  I have been watching NBC’s Thursday night comedy line-up for many years, and I’ve never understood why NBC is considered to be a “third place network,” since all of my favorite shows were on NBC.  I’ve been a huge fan of The Office, 30 Rock, and Parks and Recreation since each of those shows began, but I’ve never loved a show as much as I love Community.

I love Community because it is a truly unique sitcom.  It is innovative, imaginative, and there has never been another show like it.  I get tired of the same old multi-camera sitcoms that other networks air, but I know with Community each time I tune in I’ll be seeing something fresh and new.  It never fails to make me laugh.  One of my favorite episodes is called “Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design.”  I’ve seen that episode a dozen times, but every time I see Jeff and Annie chase the mysterious night school professor into Troy and Abed’s giant blanket fort, I laugh as if it’s the first time.  It’s also the smartest show on TV, according to BuddyTV.com, and evidenced by the “Beetlejuice” Easter egg recently revealed by Dan Harmon, as well as by my favorite episode from this year (so far), “Remedial Chaos Theory.”  What other sitcom would be brave enough or smart enough to devote and entire episode to exploring what would happen if each character left the room?  You only need to read the rave critical reviews of that episode to know how beloved it was.

Besides being the smartest and funniest show on TV, the other reason I love Community so much is because I can relate to the characters.  I feel like I’ve taken the journey through college with them.  I worry about my grades like Annie, I want to make the world a better place like Britta, and sometimes I just want to build a blanket fort and watch TV with my best friend like Troy and Abed.  No matter what else is going on in my life or how stressful school gets, I know that I can count on Joel, Alison, Gillian, Yvette, Danny, Donald, Ken, Jim, and Chevy to make me laugh every Thursday night at eight.

That is why I hope you will renew Community for a fourth season: because these characters deserve to graduate from Greendale Community College, and we, the fans, deserve closure.  The thought of not getting to see that-of the story being cut off in the middle-makes me incredibly sad.  Dan Harmon, the creator of the show, is a genius, as you already know.  He has spoken in interviews about the plans he has for a four season arch for the characters so they can have a complete and well-rounded journey.  If the show gets cut short after only three seasons, it will end on a dark note rather than the celebratory one it deserves.  The cast, crew, and fans have invested in the characters’ journey through college, and we want to see that journey pay off with a graduation ceremony.

I understand that NBC is a business, and you can’t indulge the creator and the fans just for the sake of closure.  There is, however, a practical reason to renew Community: syndication.  If Community is renewed for another year in order to reach the number of episodes needed for a syndication deal, both NBC and Sony would both make a profit off of the show.  With a syndication deal Community is also guaranteed to become a classic as esteemed at Seinfeld or Friends and gain brand-new viewers.  Years from now, fans will see “Remedial Chaos Theory” or one of the Christmas episodes in syndication and remember all over again why Community was our favorite show and why Greendale is where we belong.

Thank you for your time and for producing such a wonderful show.  I hope you will consider renewing Community for a fourth season.

Sincerely,
Jessica
