Come Together

The day didn't get off to a great start, I'll say that much...

My mom had to go into the hospital this morning for a heart cat-scan. No worries, it's for nothing really really serious. I was happy to find the nurse and the doctor who did the scan were nice and above all competent people. They took good care of my mom throughout the whole thing. What wasn't so great about it was they gave some meds to my mom that would do things like dye her blood for the scan and slightly enlarge parts of the heart. Don't ask me too much, I don't know how to really explain it all. ^^;

So after the test was over my mom said she felt fine, fine enough to drive. We stopped at the bank to get money for lunch and upon backing up Velma, we hit a Saturn. I was kind of numb to it at first but it slowly sank in. The woman's car that was hit had no damage done to it, Velma took the hit. The bumper on the right side got crunched. No one was hurt besides the van. The woman was in a hurry to get to O'Hare and traded info with my mom. She seemed kind of nervous about giving my mom her name and number. She even asked, "You're not going to file the claim against me are you?" My mom said no because it was her fault. So no cops were called, but my mom is sad over what happened. She feels strange about having hit someone, just like out of place I guess. I think she'll be alright. Instead of having her drive me to Lincoln park as first planned, I grabbed a metra into town. I told her to go home and sleep, which she did.
Tonight was also the big and widely looked forward to Halo 3 Tourny... It was hella fun. ^^

This is the first time I believe Jmac, DeFrag, and Linux have come together for one big uber project and I'm glad we did. The tourny was split up in the CTI building in the loop. It was between the 1st and 4th floors. DeFrag asked Jmac to kick in some money for the event, which included buying a pair of walkie talkies... I like those. lol. The DeFrag President held onto one on the 1st floor while I kept the other on the 4th. Things ran alright considering the millions of events and needs concerned with a tourney. I got to help write down scores and keep communication open with the 1st floor. Matsuri-chan, JamFish, Zach, and Brandy also helped out with the task of keeping order. Luckily JamFish set up a chat to get scores to the place where they needed to go, e.i. Lart. ^^

Got to see a whole bunch of great people tonight. Roman, RPG, Gai-sensei, Vicka, Wookie, ect. There was a great mix of the Jmacers, DeFrag, Linux people there. I'd say the turn out was at least 200-250. Joe came tonight too and even though it didn't go well for him, he helped me get through the night lol. Oh! And the Walkie Talkies! We picked some people using our frequency who were speaking in Spanish. Joe guessed they might have been valets because they talked about needing to do something faster and cars. At first I just said some Spanish back to them like, "Que?" "Quando?" At one point the conversation got long and I said, "Wow Chris, your Spanish is amazing!" Then he replied, "Yeah, I've been working on it! Glad you noticed!" It was hilarious until one of the Spanish guys said something that wasn't Merry Christmas... then we switched frequency.

I got to see Chris Lytle tonight. Which is ironic. Why? It's Conant's homecoming night.... Yes to all... HAPPY HAPPY HOMECOMING! lol He transferred to DePaul this year and seems to be happy among us. He got passed the first round, but sadly lost in the second. We got caught up on some stuff, such as the saga of Mitchel... wow. Talk about insanity. We also chatted about the fact that someone from our class got killed. A kid with the last name of Fabian. I know I remember hearing that name somewhere. I feel like I knew him too. It's sad I don't remember.

It feels weird to almost... not care about homecoming tonight. I'm not sure why and I almost feel guilty about it. I even got a text from Ropiak asking if I was at the game. I just said, "Nope, I'm at Depaul". I just let it all go, I was with friends and even more. I was where I really wanted to be, amongst good people who I wanted to be with. I feel sorry I missed the game, but in truth, not very sorry. I guess that's because Snuffy's not here to share the game with me. I think she might have been the reason those homecoming games after 05 were still fun. Snuffy and I could laugh about the past and remember together. This year, I had no one really to remember with, so I lived for the present.

The coming together of subcultures. It's an interesting thing. It's like... a huge family reunion. You see a whole bunch of uncles, aunts, and cousins you never knew outside of their names. Then you get a chance to talk and it's like, "wow, I never knew how cool that guy/girl was". All gamers are otaku, but not all otaku are gamers. There was no question tonight of which group was doing the most work or who wasn't doing anything. It was just, do this for the sake of making this work. It was an amazing thing to see what can happen when we all do come together. We put our differences aside to make something work. I loved that feeling.

Chris is a cool guy and the vice-president of DeFrag, Andrew is a great guy to work with. Andrew really listens, gives a danm, respects Jmac even thought we don't have a major backing us like DeFrag. He seems to understand our organizations aren't about power or who has more clout with DePaul, it's about doing something that members from both groups can do to have a good time. So many of our members belong to both or all three groups, why pull them apart? Why not come together and let the good times roll? I know its not something that works all the time for everyone, but most people seemed to have a lot of fun tonight. Many many people who came, didn't even really like Halo. They just wanted to be there to be with everyone.

Ross is the president of the Linux group and JamFish is the vice-president. Ross is actually a nice guy who really is on the same page as Andrew. Lets bring everyone together when we can and have a real sense of community. Sure we'll split up and do our own things, but that's part of what keeps our interests unique. It makes the times when we do something together all the cooler. All people from each group have something different to share, we're not all the same but we're not aliens to one another. It's a circle. The more we support each other the more power a subculture gains. Not everyone is a part of it or wants to be a part of it, but tonight I felt like I was a part of it. I can't wait for the next event together with our extended family . ^^
