In the spirit of playing Music for 18 musicians, i put good ol' Reich back. LA was nuts, a smokey armenian driver took from burbank to cal arts, which there was a a much too elaborate drum recording going on, and a steinway was being redone, (an inane amount of work) but other then that, it was deserted; i read the ambient century and talked and it was hot... Valencia is a very disgusting place my friends, i thought Sonoma county was plagued with SUV's, never in my life have i seen the excess of wealth and consumption like at McBean Parkway... i bought a cd player with my overdrawn checkbook and a Moby CD because the ambient century said he was good; wasn't impressed, maybe a few more listens, but after intoxication by way of AT, Sigor Ros, Wagonchrist, and others... moby seemed like a little poppy child; it was 106 and my bag was somewhat heavy; i went back to the school, there i met Corey, one of the most interesting and fun people ; a ridiculously good percussionist, tabla player, african drum, you name it; his room was a drum practice room, covered with many intoxicating substances (this is the unique quality of CalArts... most of the students are highly adept at their art and love it more then life itself; yet they still have the ability to get really fucked up and not let it affect them, its beautiful) he gave me half a score to music for 18, and then i slept in a corridor listening to two people playing the Brahmas g major violin sonata....blah blah blah (i talk too much).... finally met mike, he helped me learn the part, we rehearsed, i wish i did better, but i was sight reading... afterwards old friend Damien, and others of the ensemble in a delightful smoke, then a walk with Danny to his apartment, very funny guy but amazing pianist... a difficult walk back to cal arts (i haven't slept for probably 36 hours) and a listen to the most amazing african drumming of my life; with intense reverb thanks to this outdoor location; Damien drives me to dzuy's and jenna's, more weed, and watching chris cunnigham shorts and electronic music; then a pass out on the couch at 1 to wake up at 4 to get my shuttle, airport was surreal with no sleep; flight was overbooked had to put me on later flight; court was easy just traffic school and 15 dollar fine; ... one more week here, CalArts will be a much different yet needed life; life is beginning very exciting time it is!
