there is a neverending beeping sound made by one of the computers that is irritating me here in the computer lab. i got to illinois on thursday evening after my earlier flight was canceled as a result of the weather. there was an orientation on friday for all 60 or so participants and i have to say that everyone has been amazing. we explored champaign on friday evening after the orientation was over and did the same on saturday. considering how small the city is, i am not surprised that there are three 24-hour walmarts all relatively close to each other. a small group of us got together last night and went to see x-men in one of three movie theaters in the area. this morning i went to mass at a methodist church...talk about a little bit of culture shock - a big difference from the type of service i'm used to attending as a (sort of) catholic.

tomorrow i'm going to have my first team meeting with my research team leader. i think there are about eight of us in the group for educational policy studies. as far as i know, we're going to talk about our research interests tomorrow and continue to develop questions to ask our faculty mentor during the luncheon on tuesday. it's going to be quite a busy day... a couple of days before i left austin i lost my texas ID and consequently the people at the ID center here don't want to give me a UIUC school ID. i have to go back to their offices tomorrow, present a letter written by one of the SROP coordinators, and harass them about giving me an ID. then i get to register for classes. i'm excited to see what will happen in the next two months!
