My friend, Pet, who did her summer internship under renowned filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik, sent me an e-mail today. She said she was enjoying her stay in Tatay's Baguio house (or houses, rather; as she described it, it was a compound of small houses, one for each family member), although she felt a bit unused as a film logger and archiver. Tatay has been shooting in film since he started in the 70's, and his shooting style demands reels and reels of random "found" footage, which he goes through and edits in order to create his signature style, not quite mockumentary, not quite fiction, very "sariling dwende". So every summer, when interns come, hoping to learn more from him, he actually asks them to organize his reels. Which is not a bad way to spend your summer, considering you are going to be living inside his beautiful compound, relaxed in Baguio.
Anyway, elsewhere in the e-mail, she told me she got to know one of Tatay's sons, the youngest, Kabu. She was hanging out with him one night, and they got to know each other. Though nothing happened, she thinks he may be the one. They have been sweet with each other for three weeks now. She is concerned and particularly nervous about how Tatay might feel about her being a potential daughter in law. I think she would be fine, especially since she seems to fit right in their little place.
She also encourages me to keep going... What I'm going through right now, may be important to my personal growth. She says it's okay to experience these things, just as long as I come back home, with them.
In other news, my brother, Silvain, may drop by sometime this summer.
