Lavi in D.Gray-Man
Not much is known about Lavi before he and Bookman (aka Gramps/Panda) join the Dark(/Black) Order. His real name is unknown, having cast it off to become a Bookman, those who record the hidden history of the world, and Lavi is his 49th alias after casting off Deak (the 48th). One thing that may keep Lavi from becoming a Bookman is his growing attachment to his fellow Exorcists; a Bookman has to be indifferent and unattached for he is always on the move to collect history. The lives of others are just ink on a page and nothing more to a Bookman, something that since his time as Deak, Lavi has steadily been forgetting.

As a Bookman in training Lavi learned martial arts and medication skills, things crucial to becoming a Bookman. Another skill that Lavi has is that he has an incredible memory and is able to memorize every single aspect of anything he sees. The story behind Lavi's right eye is unknown and it is always covered in canon. Although he did make a comment in one chapter if he was using both eyes he'd be able to find a key that Tyki Mikk had shown them then tossed in a huge pile faster.

They both joined the Order when Lavi was sixteen as exorcists, the form of Lavi's Innocence is a hammer called Ōzuchi Kozuchi or Big Hammer, Little Hammer. The hammer is capable of growing and extending to unknown sizes and lengths but no matter how big the weight does not bother Lavi, though it bothers others. Ōzuchi Kozuchi uses seals partial towards elements; bringing fire, lightning, wood against the enemy. Even still Lavi has not learned all the seals and once Bookman had to remind his trainee that he could use the Wood Seal.

Lavi is rather cheerful and loves the beautiful older ladies. A favorite hobby of his, besides reading, is giving nicknames and teasing others. He considers Allen to be a little brother of sorts and constantly teases him as well as their teammate Kanda Yuu, whom Lavi affectionately calls by his given name much for the other teen's dissatisfaction.

Lavi in AirGear
As far back as he can recall Lavi doesn't remember ever having parents or a parental figure that loved him. Raised by a grouchy grandfather who wanted nothing to do with an ill-begotten grandson. Early in his childhood Lavi exhibited the beginnings of becoming a pyromaniac, setting small fires where ever he could with anything flammable. The only things he avoided setting fire to was anything of his grandfather's, didn't want a beating, and animals, no point in being mean to them as the world is cruel enough. This 'bad habit' of his kept Lavi from having very many friends in his childhood; it was more common for him to have members of a group who would turn around and betray each other if it meant that they could escape a punishment or blame for some wrong deed. From this Lavi decided to trust only himself and look out for himself, there was nothing in him at the time that even hinted at teamwork being a possibility.

When he entered high school Lavi's grandfather decided it was time to pass down his own son's Air Treks. The surprisingly nimble old man taught Lavi everything he knew about the ATs, how to use them, care for them, and even about the battles. It seemed that he knew that Lavi would eventually find his way to them and any forewarning from someone who knew what could happen in them might have some impact. Lavi learned quickly, eagerly, finally having something to put his frustrations into besides setting fire to things. A brilliant rider bursting out onto the scene many teams scrambled to recruit him yet no one was successful in this endeavor.

Yes, he was brilliant but Lavi had no concept of teamwork, nor did he care for teammates. Choosing not to trust anyone for there was always the threat of constant backstabbing and ruthless undermining from his days in middle school, he rode alone. And after a time no one wanted him in their teams, not because he wasn't strong because he was but because Lavi had a strange passion for setting just the ends of uniforms on fire, causing chaos wherever he rode past. Joining no one the pyro-rider went on just enjoying being able to fly as high and as far as he wanted. One day being bored as he usually got Lavi flew off to battlefield in the mountains, stumbling upon a battle for the Flame Road. Silly though to fight for something and yet not use it to keep it. With spectators wrapped up in the fight he saw no reason not to take the Regalia though at the time he didn't know what they were other than a cool set of wheels.

Flame Regalia (from AirGear)

Only when he started putting them on his own ATs did his grandfather notice and tell him about the Regalia. He was thrilled of course at finding something that was so him and apparently so were the Regalia as they accepted him as their rider. Lavi started learning more complex moves to compliment and activate his Regalia's special attacks but seemed content to just roam around on the imaginary flames. Then he caught the notice of Kanda Yuu, another King and a classmate, they duked it out but it came to a draw; had the fight continued on Lavi was most likely the one to lose as he had yet to learn everything about his new wheels. That and he had to recover from his own foolishness that caused him to lose an eye to severe burns, his own fault but it didn't make him cautious about fire at all. Months of training turned into years and before he knew it he had defeated many riders at the dawn of his senior year of high school.

Then Allen and his crew, The Exorcists, came along, laying their emblem on the line in favor of Lavi joining them. He didn't exactly lose this fight but during the tides of battle he saw the sky that the younger boy was fighting for and decided it might be fun to stick around...at least for a while. Eventually Kanda joined them, much to his own amusement and he never let his year-mate get too far from everyone else.

A bittersweet moment when Tyki joined their team, the man provided much that they needed especially being a partner to Lavi. His combination of time with the pyro's Flame Road made the duo almost un-defeatable. It was almost inevitable that Tyki betrayed them by trying to steal Lavi's Regalia, something Lavi had apparently stolen from The Noah years ago. The fight for the Regalia between himself and Tyki left the confident pyro critically injured, allowing the older man to step off with the precious wheels. Thankfully Kanda halted that messy business, shredding one of the older man's limbs. Lavi never really got over that betrayal even though he knew he should have been expecting it. Troubled by how easily he was defeated Lavi started training, trying to master the same moves that his former partner had used to compliment him so well. Mastering a bit of Time himself Lavi moves swiftly though not as quick as the original, it is part of his Road but not. He polished his Road into something harder and stronger so he wouldn't have to rely on someone ever again. Teamwork still comes hard to him but he's getting better at it.

Other Miscellaneous Information

Powers: The way his Regalia works is heat and friction of the wheels and the ground, most of his attacks or powers are based off this. Quite naturally when he "runs" flames about half a foot high pop up and follow him, these are illusionary and do not cause any harm. There's a slight manipulation of time where it seems as if the victim cannot move their body, Lavi can either attack them or get away, or use it to compliment another teammate's moves.

Possessions: His ATs, or Air Trecks, money and cell phone, a bag that has a few common repair items in it about the size of a fanny pack. Also a few dozen lighters, he's a bit of a pyro.

Body Type: Wiry and agile Lavi's body can handle the beatings he puts it under on a daily basis. He may seem not all that strong but he has muscles of considerable strength, they're just not big guns. His flexibility has come out mostly to avoid attacks from Kanda.

Clothing Style: The bottoms of his jeans are constantly shredded and ripped, always in a matter of seconds if they happen to be new ones. The boot-cut denim always seems to be a bit singed at the bottoms as well, part of his flaming appeal. His shirts always seem to revolve around bands, tight and short-sleeved. Lavi's only coat, if he wears one (rarely), is a green USMC coat that seems to be from decades ago, hiding his fingerless gloves. He'll almost always have a black headband on to pull back his hair. When not wearing his ATs, which he usually has strapped and slung over his shoulder, Lavi wears boots to protect his ankles with good traction.

Speaking Style: He'll dance around most issues if he doesn't want to answer the question asked but most of the time Lavi will tell you what it is is on his mind. He rarely indulges in mind games, they leave a bad taste in his mouth, he'd rather say it and get it over and done with.

General Demeanor: Unless he knows you the general aura he gives off is one of tolerance, he doesn't like the threat hanging overhead of being betrayed. If he gets bored or angry one would be wise to watch out as the lighter that he's always carrying might just come out. If it's a "friend" (read as teammate) he'll bother them constantly as a way to entertain himself.

Career: The King of the Flame Road, a Storm Rider for The Exorcists. And a high-school student of average grades though if he applied himself to his studies he could easily take first. Has an errand-boy job he does after school for a few hours with varying pay.

Prejudices: Lavi hates betrayal in any form, any kind of lie except for the white ones, secret agendas and of course anyone who gets in the way of him flying. Doesn't really care for those who call ATs "skates", demeaning the higher heights that the riders take to.

Best Qualities: Though he rarely exhibits the trait Lavi is pretty loyal to those who treat him good with no hints towards dropping him. He'll do anything to protect his team but still watches his own back to ward off anything else. A quick learner he doesn't have to see a trick but once before he's got it completely memorized. Learning how to do it himself still takes time and practice. Always on time and always clean, it's the way he was raised and hell if he isn't because here comes his grandfather's punishment.

Worst Qualities: He's always looking out for himself even when working in a team, not that he's not looking out for the team as well. He's too used to being turned on by those he trusts and its made him a bit paranoid. Lavi gets angry rather quickly, one can blame it on his hair if they like, but unlike many redheads who vent rather loudly Lavi turns his anger inward. He'll run off to be alone, solitude and ignoring everyone are his ways to deal with it all. When he's in this condition or one of intense training Lavi will also ignore to take care of his body's nutritional needs. He won't eat or drink until his pouting session is over and done with.

Weaknesses: Something stated over and over again, the fear that's always with him, betrayal and abandonment. It cripples him in ways he hasn't realized just yet, restraining him from fully extending his wings. The real friends he has finally found, he doesn't want to lose them or have them hurt and this new feeling also makes him confused and weak.

Hobbies: Air Treck, dancing (flexibility), training, learning guitar or languages, fire tricks.

Talents: Pretty good with a lot of flame tricks, good with fire control in general. Most likely this comes from years of playing with fire, not the smartest thing for a young child to do but it was a way to express himself until he found ATs. Lavi also enjoys playing the guitar even though he's still learning it, most of the time he says it's so he can tune his own Regalia but secretly he admires those who can play and wishes to be one of those.

Mostly because of Gramps Lavi knows several languages though he hardly uses them, listed in order of fluency: Japanese, English, French, Korean, Latin (learning), Mandarin, Cantonese, German, Russian, Spanish, Indonesian.

And similar to his persona in D.Gray-Man Lavi can remember anything he's seen/read although he may not immediately recall it or know how to use it.

Since boarding Permanent Way
Ryoko Asakura, the first person that he met on the train and rather nicely told him about the various kinds of cars and that they move around after Lavi realized his phone had no signal at all. After that Lavi started his search for the park car, the one car he wouldn't mind hunting for. Taking a break Lavi met Zuko Lee, busy singing a song and walking past Lavi, whom recognized it and they hit it off with a musical bond. Showed him a rough map of the place too and warned him of the theft going around. That made him a bit paranoid, as did the sleeper cars with everyone able to get into any of the beds so Lavi slept in one of the other cars where Yuu Kanda found him. Lavi's teammate arrived on the train even though they were supposed to be taking different ones. Not that Lavi minds it, just means there's someone else on the train that he knows and can train (lol) with. Their search for the front of the train ends up in a failure most likely and Lavi returns to searching for the park car.

Still looking for the park car Lavi wandered into a park car where a rather weird girl was drawing a tree on a rather long piece of paper. What little they talked led Lavi to believe she was kind of technical but at the same time not all the way there, still she seemed to be like all the others he had met so far on the train, amiable. Not long after Lavi had a brief encounter with a somewhat dangerous guy, they played a game of chicken to which Lavi gave way only because he wanted to get further away from the dining car he was leaving. The pyromaniac in him had set off the fire sprinklers just as he was exiting, drenching the food and those within.

In the garden car Lavi had the opportunity to meet two individuals while he still searched for the park car; the first was Ken, a fellow who apparently knew Lavi and Kanda from his own world (and time). It's a first time in a while that he had the opportunity to speak in Japanese and hear it back, Lavi and Ken talked about a few things and one of those being about Zuko's death during the monster battle. He's sad to hear that the guy died especially since they had hit it off so well earlier but it doesn't bother the pyro too much. The second person Lavi meets in the garden car is a little girl who calls herself Marlene and at the time he met her she was carrying around a doll named Bubblehead. Although fearful of the fire-marks on his clothes she talks to Lavi about oceans, snow, and missing things and by the end of the conversation she has relaxed a little around him.

Having heard about it from Marlene, Lavi wasn't too surprised to find a chunk of ice in the snow car. Lavi kicked it out of the car into another after trying to melt the ice in the snowy room and thawed it with his ATs to find Wobbuffet inside. The thing seemed okay if a bit burned from the pyro trying to save it from being frozen, after putting some aloe on it Lavi left it. Hoping that it would be able to find its owner in a timely fashion and stay away from the snow car. The second time Lavi and Marlene meet Lavi's more concerned with trying to find the paint bandit that stamped his ATs and Marlene is enthralled by the aquarium car, covered in paint. After a getting more than a little bit of paint on Lavi's clothes they manage to clean Ben, Marlene, and his AT in one of the laundry cars, a bit more bonding goes on as they share information of their homes and people they'd met there. Lavi freaks a bit about there being a slug in her stomach and her inability to really feel pain but they both get each other to open a bit more.

Somehow getting their clothes dirty/soiled is a habit for upon their third meeting Marlene is rather sick from drinking strawberry milk and throws up on Lavi once or twice from the slug in her stomach refusing the pink liquid. Unfortunately Lavi can't do much for her but he did keep Marlene company and went to fetch Ben, bringing the moogle back to the infirmary car. Serena's voice interrupted his nap but he didn't mind much, they're kind of alike with feeling like everyone is out to get them and Serena doesn't irk him like the others. After filling her in with what he knows about the train they go off to the aquarium car at Serena's request, running into Marlene, whom they talk about fishes for a short while and start to search again for the park car.

When Lavi finally finds the car he's been searching for since day one he gets to share his very visible happiness with three people. The first is quite luckily Marlene, while he flies around she's clunking in his boots since she doesn't particularly care for the way the grass feels. While he makes a crown and bracelet out of the flowers she picked they talk about siblings and holidays; Lavi accidentally gives the wrong age to Marlene. (More of mun's fault since she plays different versions of Lavi elsewhere.) The second person literally scared the rider into a tumble when he randomly spoke to Lavi, turns out they both were rather lost within the park car at the moment. Never got his name but Lavi found himself not minding answering the guy's questions, for some reason he reminded him a lot of his captain. The last person to find him in the park car is Ken and the two talk about missing the sky and how the fake one is nice, also briefly talking about how Ken got his own burn scars.

His first run in with Sam is in a situation Lavi normally shies away from, mostly from the bad memories it brings up. Sam's in the bar car, in the proccess of getting drunk with Marlene's moogle Ben as company. Lavi throws a few back to get rid of his nightmares as they talk in Japanese for a while about ATs and Rapture. Lavi ends up not minding Sam, even if he is drinking, and they have a good conversation. Lavi's next meeting with Marlene isn't one of his favorites to recall seeing as how it ended; in the infirmary car patching up a few new injuries Marlene's "reprogramming" kind of freaks Lavi out, it's not his Marlene. They have a small spat that sends Lavi off for a few days to hide as he's like to do when upset. When he comes out of hiding Lavi runs into Willy and Sam; Willy cooks up something really good for the gaunt Lavi to eat, something he's rather appreciative of. Their conversation is rather weird with the talk of dinosaurs and the like but the guy's company isn't all that bad. His talk with Sam ends up as some kind of weird date, full with a dinner, a walk in the park (with some one-upping), and dessert that ends in the both of them being thrown  out of the dining car. Their conversations are really all-bearing with not a lot of things remaining secrets and ends on a slightly flirtatious note leaving both parties slightly confused.

Lavi's ecstatic when he finds Kanda again, though the interaction is brief. He actually tries talking to "shark-breath" about relationships which is never a good thing, it's also a rather impossible thing to do given Kanda's antisocial nature. Marlene manages to park herself under Lavi's tree house and they take a trip to the laundry car after making up. He gives her Ben back, having kept a hold of him since gaining the moogle from his first conversation with Sam, with an additional wing. The two of them end up talking about nonsensical things, mostly from Marlene trying to keep from "dreaming" out of fear of ending up "sleeping", until they both fall asleep in the tree house. The pyro keeps on his 'cheer up' rounds with Sam, whom has been made paranoid by the ghost-brat with his talk of clouds after abandoning his search momentarily for the music car. Lavi and Sam toss a few back after Lavi realizes he missed his birthday (f-locked) by over a month, moving to a booth when the car gets more occupants. Lavi's innocent flirting with the birthday girl of the party ends up with the guys kissing, Sam using his plasmid to initiate it. Of course Lavi's not too thrilled with it, the brief squabble putting the two in a sleeper car where Sam kisses him again. Things get even more heated and end up taking the two of them to Sam's apartment in the  apartment car (NSFW) after they shock the birthday girl who came to give them the items they left in the bar car.

Having put himself in a relationship now, and the fact that Lavi figured it was time these two meet anyway, he set up a dinner with Kanda and Sam. It actually went surprisingly well considering there was very little talk, then again Kanda was never the most social of people. Still Lavi got his impending ass-kicking notice and Sam met his shredder should  Kanda find Lavi broken come their parting. Of course with plans to also train with Kanda in a newly found warehouse car lead to a bandaged and worn out Lavi, something that alerts the new guy. Lavi's pyromaniac tendencies don't sit well with the guy either, something about him reminds Lavi of Sam and it's really weird. But the connection is made clear when Lavi gets awoken by a rather drunk Sam from one of his own horrible nightmares. There's a good deal of angsting done by both parties, Lavi not wanting to share and Sam trying to come to grips with this new information of his family looking for him. They have a few arguments, little ones, that get sorted out and Sam crashes in the tree house with Lavi since finding the apartment car on his own is unlikely with how drunk he was. However when Ken wakens Lavi from his nightmares the result starts off very trauma-inducing, Lavi's bad shoulder is grabbed and springs him awake with lighters in hand. After dropping them and apologizing they get to talking as they're like to do, Lavi learns Zuko is back from the dead and gives Ken a brief overview of what Tyki did to their team and why he's so set on killing the older man. Ken tells a little more about his home including the Lavi Ken knows there and the Akuma he faces with his Innocence, which gives Lavi a scare himself.

Sam still feels uneasy about the last time they left off and it shows when Lavi runs into him in an ice cream parlor car; Lavi obviously is over it despite Sam being drunk previously, something he detests. For a while they talk of places in Rapture and cherry stem tying, Lavi tries his hand at it and manages after breaking a few. Lavi tells Sam that he's found his apartment and they go off to the apartment car to "explore", Sam's really enthralled by all the electronic gizmos though the city noises turn him off. Things get heated between them again leading to a little midnight romp (NSFW) with a nice massage in the middle to help Sam. A few days go by calmly, until Lavi hears that a passenger was almost, with what or by whom he doesn't know. He goes looking for Marlene, worried for the most part about his little friend. The worry grows when Marlene asks Lavi to take care of Ben for her when he finds her in the aquarium car, along with her words about hiding from "Big Brother" and Marlene's avoidance from answering Lavi's questions about "Big Brother". He promises to her that he'll keep her safe like a Big Daddy, not knowing exactly what he's agreeing to at the time. But Lavi leaves her sleeping in the vent in the aquarium car, not knowing the next time he finds Marlene there she's freezing and soaked in blood, her own as Lavi finds out. He realizes that somehow the slug was killed and starts to try and find Sam to ask if he can fix Marlene, or save her, but Marlene's last request has him going back to the aquarium car. She dies in his arms and Lavi puts her back in the vent, staying with her corpse for a while, before wandering off in a daze.

The next time Lavi shows up it's a few days later and he's in a daze, walking around and mumbing under his breath in a variety of languages, not really seeing anything he passes or anyone. Sam is the first person he runs into but he doesn't even recognize him for a while, just going on and on about failing Marlene. Sam gets some food in Lavi's stomach after getting him into a clean shirt, taking him back to his apartment to maybe get some sleep. Lavi does sleep for a short bit, some of the progress having been made getting erased by a passing whale, but he does break out of his weird mood. And doesn't remember a single thing past hiding his ATs, which freaks Sam out a bit. Ken he finds in a library car, not even a nosebleed causing punch brings Lavi out of his mood. Some good miso soup and the possibility of taking a golem from his original canon apart however brings him out of it, he still wants to walk though. Lavi's wanderings have him meeting Erika for the first time, probably not the best mood to meet her in when he's babbling like a fool. Her powers go a little wonky and the two of them go off to hunt Big Brother down and make him pay for killing Marlene. It's more like crazy Erika is leading and dazed Lavi is following. River is once again crossing paths with him though he still doesn't get her name, they talk about Big Brother and Kaoru whom are wondering why Marlene almost killed Kaoru.

A few days later Lavi truly breaks out of his daze, and doesn't remember a thing. He recalls the people he met but not a thing that happened, how he got from here to there. But he does remember that Marlene died, it just doesn't hurt as much. He recovers enough to get a chocolate-craving and puts on a tiger costume consisting of ears, a tail, and claw/paw-gloves; he's returning it when he runs into Ticky. They talk for a bit, Ticky concluding something is wrong with Lavi, whom is still recovering from his mental restart, he makes Lavi lead the way to a dining car. He eats food he gets himself but after the meal the reunion goes back to something he dreads, non-consensual intimacy and being a punching bag for when he retaliates. Lavi manages to get away by crawling through the vents, something Ticky is too big to crawl into himself.

Relationships with others
From Lavi's point-of-view
Strike denotes drop

Ryoko Asakura - A nice girl. First person I met on the train.
Zuko Lee - A guy with good tastes in movies and knows how to play guitar. Not too bad.
Yuu Kanda - He somehow got stuck on the same train with me even though we took different ones. Oh well. Someone to fight against at least. Still has yet to kick my ass for getting into a relationship with Sam, but I know it's coming.
River Tam - Weird girl. Doesn't seem all there but there are moments that she's well...all there and more.
Lelouch vi Britannia - Rather abrupt and seems somewhat dangerous. Didn't stick around long to find out how dangerous.
Ken Hidaka - Says he knows me from another world. Leery of me because of my flames but still sticks around. Nice to hear Japanese again. I consider him a friend, we look out for each other.
Marlene Wallace - She's like a little sister that I never had or knew I wanted. Even though we've had a squabble I still wanna look out for her, keep her out of Seishirou's clutches. I consider her a friend, something hard for me to admit but became evident when she died.
Wobbuffet; belongs to Kyon - The thing is nice enough, rather stupid though getting itself stuck in the snow car.
Serena Tsukino - Nice girl we have a lot more in common than I thought we would. Marlene's comfortable around her too so she must be good.
Suzaku Kururugi - Scared the shit out of me in the park car. Seems like an okay guy.
Sam Winchester - At first I didn't think I'd care much for him because of his drinking but Sam worked his way in under my skin. I can totally relax around him and trust Sam immensely, extreme and mutual love from both of us, plus the sex is great. We have our share of arguments and spats but always seem to make up in a short amount of time.
Willy Wonka - Kinda out there but seems like an okay guy. Great cook.
Dean Winchester - For some reason reminds me of Sam but never got the guy's name. He's another one who doesn't like fire, why do I run into these people?
Erika - Don't remember much from meeting her as I was doing a mental-restart at the time but she seems like a pretty loyal gal. We'd probably get along pretty good.
Ticky Mick - Did not want to see him on board. Avoiding as much as I can, though Marlene seems to like him and know him as Aeon.
