Brooklyn Nine Nine: Halloween IV
Okay, best episode ever or BEST EPISODE EVER? ZOMG THAT WAS SO GREAT.
There was nothing about this episode I didn't love, from Jake's creepy Boyle stand-in to Gina's false teeth to Holt's EVERYTHING (CHEDDAR!) to Terry's impatience to ROSA AND AMY BEING THE BEST TEAM. The show really turned me around on Jake/Amy and I am happy to ship it in canon as it has currently played out, but ROSA/AMY is like the SHIP OF MY HEART for this show and everything about their team up made me squee like a teenage girl at a boy band concert.
The Flash: Magenta
I didn't think missing one episode (last week's) would be so important, but I guess I missed a lot of the changes in this new timeline, and also the introduction of Draco, I mean, Julian. I can't decide whether it's too obvious that he's Alchemy so he can't be or if it's exactly the kind of obvious these writers would go for. I mean, he obviously is hiding something but what I can't yet say.
Otoh, this had a lot to like - Cisco and Harry will never not be the most hilarious team up, but also Joe and Wally and Wally and Jesse were adorable. DAD COP. I really would like to see Wally continue on to become a brilliant engineer in addition to being a speedster. Wally was exactly the kind of dumbass he should be, stepping out into traffic to jumpstart his powers. I absolutely believe the 19yo(?) Wally West of any universe would do that. (and he's still eight million times less annoying than animated YJ Wally was for a long time.) I also loved the joy Jesse took in her powers. That was what was so great about the first season of this show, and it got lost in season 2, but hopefully she can spark that back up in Barry (or Wally can when he finally gets his powers). They better not kill Jesse off, is all I'm saying. Have her go back to Earth 2 to be the superhero they need, while stranding Harry in Earth 1 would work for me, because without Wells, this show doesn't work.
I guess Barry and Iris are a thing? I would like to be more all in on it but since they don't seem to be, I'm just like, "...can we get to the cute established couple portion of this relationship, because this hesitation is just annoying." They have sweet chemistry, I want them to be together, just do it already!
I laughed that Magenta had Magneto's powers, mostly because if you've spent any time in any X-adjacent fandom, you know how often Magneto is misspelled "Magento" (often accompanied by "Rouge"). I like that they didn't lock her up in the blackbox prison! Though I hope the foster family they placed her with was given a heads up that she might have some issues.
And a spoiler from next week's promo:
MIRROR MASTER. FINALLY.
And since it's Wednesday, that means books:
What I've just finished
Modern Lovers by Emma Straub, which was full of sparkling prose but also full of predictable plot points. I liked the Zoe/Jane+Elizabeth storyline best. The kids were cute, if overly familiar types. The husband's storyline was unfortunately both predictable and tedious and made me downgrade the book quit a bit.
I did like the sense of place it evoked, and the observation that New York City is a palimpsest and to feel like you've really lived here you need to remember three layers back (e.g., the boutique that used to be a toy store that used to be a Mailboxes).
Star Wars: Lost Stars by Claudia Gray
Again, I liked this but it was...I don't want to say rote, because I liked the characters and it did a good job of feeling like it took place within the GFFA and giving faces to the rank and file in the Imperial military, but it was very predictable (as I was reading, I felt like I could see the outline as each event happened and how it would tie in with the OT timeline). Or perhaps I've just read a lot more YA romance than a lot of people on goodreads who read Star Wars tie-ins and seemed surprised? Or I already know that Claudia Gray is a good writer so that didn't surprise me either?
Anyway, I like how it's always Wedge who shows up when people want to connect directly to the OT without bringing in the golden trio (though there's a line about RotJ-era Leia that made me cackle with glee) or Vader as a supporting character. Aw, Wedge. And I also liked the characterization of Mon Mothma.
What I'm reading now
Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari. Interesting so far, though I just started it this morning so I'm not very far into it.
What I'm reading next
All of the things I was eagerly anticipating for release have come out and been read (though possibly I will be seeking someone in the UK to get me a copy of "The Hanging Tree" next month if it actually comes out? Idek), so I don't know.
