closer than a sister to her baby brother

Friday morning afternoon miscellany:

= Recs update:

unfitforsociety has been updated for September 2016 with 24 recs in 7 fandoms:

* 12 Star Wars
* 4 Avengers
* 2 Check, Please!
* 2 Ghostbusters
* 2 Stranger Things
* 1 Harry Potter & 1 Star Trek Beyond

= Pitch: The Interim
While the dialogue is still occasionally clunky and I think the show might be trying to do too much too quickly (I think having the catcher and the agent hook up so early is a little questionable, but then, maybe it's best to get it out of the way quickly? I am undecided), I enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed Ginny's relationship with her brother (BJ BRITT!), which I hope is revisited in the narrative present (why wasn't he at either of her games so far?), and also Blip and Evelyn=OTP! They better not screw with their happy marriage because I love it a lot! I am very tense about it because I'm afraid they're going to have a ~shocking reveal~ that one of them is cheating and I just DO NOT WANT THAT AT ALL.

The fact that that reporter was Mike's ex was a surprise, but I guess law of conservation of characters makes it make sense - she was the only fictional personality we saw on television, right? Everybody else was FS1 or Jimmy Kimmel? Speaking of which, I loved Ginny going off script, and I can understand the choice to swallow the coach's softer version of sexism to address the rape story - I feel like this is the kind of trade-off women have to make all the time. The coach is old-fashioned and seemingly harmless, and probably unable to really accept that he's wrong; the rape is the kind of thing that should be addressed as strongly as possible, which Ginny did, though I can't imagine any of that actually made it to air, since it's a taped show.

I don't really love Amelia quitting because of her inability to have children, though I did love the walking out because of the potential for a Robert Rodriguez X-Babies movie. I mean, that sounds like it could be terrimazing? But I also feel like it could be the last straw at a certain point. Otoh, the part with Oscar correcting the owner about being Mexican, not Spanish, and then saying he thought that's why he was never invited to dinner with the owner was great.

Interestingly enough, I thought this episode had a real Sorkinesque vibe, not in the writing, but in terms of what actually happens - the rape in the locker room like the Sports Night episode where the rapist then assaults Natalie, and that scene in the meeting room where Amelia quits was like Sam in "In the Shadow of Two Gunmen." If only the dialogue was better!

I also thought the scene with Mike and his ex-wife was filmed in the style of FNL, because I can't figure out another reason why they'd block and shoot it that way.

= Last night,
twistedingenue mentioned how great a Check Please!/Sports Night crossover would be, and now I would really like to see Jack's big coming out interview be with Dan Rydell. ♥DAN♥ I am just saying. Also, while I'm at it with the crossovers that should exist, surely Ginny Baker should be on Sports Night and Isaac can be all stately and mentoring in public and secretly fannish about her. ♥ISAAC♥

= LUKE CAGE TONIGHT. I AM EXCITE. GIVE IT TO ME. I was talking about it with a co-worker yesterday and she was like, "We will convene on Monday to discuss!" so I guess I won't be parceling it out and making it last. Ah well, the weather is supposed to be chilly and rainy, so I guess that's all right.

= Speaking of fannishly inclined co-workers (though I haven't yet discerned the true nature of her fannishness beyond it existing), I thought the response was bad when I told non-internet people that I liked Jason Todd. That's nothing compared to the hilariously horrified reactions I get when I say, "You know, The Clone Wars actually made me like Anakin Skywalker." The recoiling that goes on then, and the clear marking down of my fannish intelligence, is pretty funny. Otoh, if she actually gives TCW a shot and likes it, I think we could have some fun chats. *hands*
