another runner in the night

Yesterday, my internet suddenly got so slow I couldn't even watch Netflix, and there was construction going on two doors down from my building, so napping didn't happen either. What an annoying way to spend a sick day. And ESPN was so glitchy that I rebooted my cable box twice but that didn't help. Luckily, it appeared to be the only glitchy channel, so the TV shows I'm actually interested in watching were fine.

The Flash: The Man Who Saved the City
Oh, Barry. They've given you so much of Peter Parker's DNA on this show that even when you win, you lose. Henry's abrupt peace out at the end was the one jarring note in an otherwise fun episode (♥Victor Garber♥), though straight up killing Atom Smasher was pretty harsh. First signs of Caitlin's eventual heel turn? (or is she not going to be an evil Killer Frost?) I guess Robbie Amell's burgeoning career means some other dude will be the brawny half of Firestorm on Legends of Tomorrow, huh? Though I'm sure Ronnie's not really dead, he's just in another parallel universe and he'll show up when it's most emotionally devastating for everyone. (Same with Eddie - I know the actor is on another show now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see an Earth 2/evil version of him show up in a sweeps episode. MULTIVERSE AHOY! I hope they are adventurous with it as Fringe was.)

I thought Barry's dream at the beginning was him seeing a different timeline, especially since Cisco also peers into a different timeline (universe?) and I also thought that's what he really meant when he said he saw the Bat Flash signal in a comic - he was seeing into DCU Earth 1 or something, since we are never ever getting Batman (or assorted family members, aside from Helena) on these shows.

Since Tom Cavanagh isn't leaving the show, are we getting Earth 2 Harrison Wells? Who just got framed for murder by Thawne!Wells?

Anyway, Joe West remains the best, especially now that he's not patronizing his daughter and actively working to keep her out of the loop. This was mostly deck-clearing from last season and setting up this season, so first we get Jay Garrick, and soon WALLY. I AM EXCITE. (Wally would have totally been jazzed about getting the key to the city. I am just saying.)

As an aside, I know he's too old, but Grant Gustin is still my mental Gansey (and even though he is also too old, Zach Gilford is my mental Adam; I'm not really attached to anyone else as any of the other TRC characters).

iZombie: Grumpy Old Liv
Okay, show, Clive walking off Racist!Liv is just...*shakes head* Fix that! Let him find out already! Or at least have her explain that along with the visions she gets the personalities of the victims! Because that was some over the line shit! And unlike Ravi, who knows what's happening, Clive just has to continue working with her. I did love Ravi calling her Archie Bunker. (and also calling the zombie cure rat "A New Hope." Ha! "If I wanted it to be a disappointment, I'd have named it Phantom Menace." How much of that was them writing in Rahul Kohli's adorable nerdery?)

Otherwise, I thought this was a really strong episode, though I wish Liv would just tell her mother that she has Hep C, she's seeing a doctor about it (she and Ravi could mock up some paperwork, I'm sure), and that's why she couldn't give Evan her blood, and thus not be shunned from the family. You'd think given how poorly it went with keeping it a secret from Major, she'd have learned, but no. It's just going to explode in her face again, I'm sure.

Especially with Clive investigating Major. And Major now under Max Rager's thumb. Oh man, Major.

I also really like what they're doing with Blaine. Now we just need more Ravi.

So that was a good night of teevee. Arrow tonight! Let's hope the show rebounds from last season's...messiness. Also, I am terrified for Felicity. I know it'll never happen, but I keep hoping they'll just let her and Oliver be a couple without a ton of terrible relationship drama. It worked for Hart to Hart! IJS. I'm also excited to see Thea suiting up as Speedy/Red Arrow.

Also also, even though I already watched it back in June, the Star Wars Rebels s2 premiere is tonight. ♥AHSOKA♥ Please don't die!

And now, books:

What I've just finished
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. Genetics professor with Asperger's decides it's time to get married, so he puts together a questionnaire in an attempt to find the perfect wife. His douchey BFF sends Rosie to him for ~reasons and they end up falling in love even though she doesn't match his qualifications. Cute romance, have no interest in reading the sequel.

The Girls at the Kingfisher Club by Genevieve Valentine. Jazz Age retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, with no real magic, though you do have to buy that 12 daughters would be that quiet and able to stay hidden for so long. I enjoyed it immensely once I accepted that premise.

In addition to reading all 52 issues of Batman Eternal (I talked about it yesterday), I read Grayson Annual #1, which had some cute bits in it (oh my god, Dick, never change) but was overall too much stereotypical "Irish" nonsense to work for me. I rolled my eyes a lot.

I also read the first four issues of Robin: Son of Batman, and I have no idea what's going on, but I like that Damian is teaming up with the daughter of one of his dead enemies, and also a man-bat-thing(?), in order to atone for crimes he committed as a 9 yo(!!!) at his mother's behest. Also, apparently Talia was dead but she isn't anymore and there's a lot of al Ghul mystic nonsense coming into play. *hands* I probably won't continue with it until it's complete.

I'm not sure what propelled this sudden urgent need to get back to reading Batfamily titles, but I'm enjoying it despite some occasional weird reboot characterization. And Cass appears in Batman and Robin: Eternal today. ♥CASS♥ I'll only have to wait six months to read the whole thing.

What I'm reading now
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. Finally. It came from the library on Monday. I have nothing to say about it yet, mostly because I'm not very far into it and I don't know yet which of my theories - if any - is going to play out.

What I'm reading next
Of course The Girl on the Train finally dropped onto my iPad (the wait list was long) the day before Ancillary Mercy and the first book of the new Rick Riordan Norse mythology series came out (I'm assuming Magnus Chase is somehow related to Annabeth, and that there will be crossovers at some point - including the Kane kids, too, I hope), so those will be next. Also the third Russell's Attic book, too.

I'm back at work today, classing up the joint with my incredible cough and trying to catch up on the backlog of email. Sigh. Is it time to go home yet?
