learn astrophysics or learn folksong

Dad's birthday dinner went well - we ended up having dessert at the restaurant (it was included in the prix fixe) and then a second dessert at my brother's. My sister, sister-in-law, and I discussed the awfulness of hot flashes (and I am here to tell you that they are really, truly awful) and the early stages of perimenopause when your period may or may not show up for months (mine was due 4/3, but has yet to make an appearance).

Anyway, I came home today, and I just watched last night's Orphan Black and the boy clones are so freaking creepy. I like how they're so much less distinguishable than Sarah and her sisters, the conformity of military life not really allowing for much differentiation. And it also means the actor doesn't have to do the kind of work Tatiana Maslany is doing, which is good because I don't know that he's capable of it. Otoh, BDP was not bad in his scene with Cal, though he still only really shined in his bits with Mrs. S. So the Castor clones are having the same glitches and illnesses as the Leda clones. Interesting. The scene where Rudy holds Kira hostage was so awful, and then he kills his brother to save him. Hopefully not foreshadowing for any of our clones. Sending Kira away is a great idea both for Sarah and the writers. Hopefully Cal can keep her safe. (Yeah, looking at that written out, I'm thinking not so much.) I was glad to see Art back, but I imagine keeping Seth's body a secret is going to throw a wrench into his relationship with Sarah and Felix. ♥FELIX♥

Poor Helena. I can't wait until she burns that compound to the ground, though I would like a different story line for her - this is the third season in a row she's in the grasp of some evil organization torturing her and trying to use her and it's upsetting.

Alison and Donnie as the friendly neighborhood drug dealers. I love how Alison's forays into crazy are so much... bigger and weirder than her sisters' and yet so in character. She really is a schemer and possibly a criminal mastermind idek.

The actor playing Dr. Neely (sp?) seems familiar, but also like they couldn't get John Noble, who probably after Walter Bishop and Henry Parrish doesn't want to play mad scientists or kindly-appearing evil doers for a while, though man, I bet he would chew the scenery on this show like there's no tomorrow.

That last image was brutal. I feel like all the shows I've been watching lately have really upped the gore factor. I can't say that I'm a fan.

In other news, Remix is back! Slightly new - hopefully less complicated? - rules. Spread the word.

and lastly, a poem:

Of Mutability

Too many of the best cells in my body
are itching, feeling jagged, turning raw
in this spring chill. It's two thousand and four
and I don't know a soul who doesn't feel small
among the numbers. Razor small.
Look down these days to see your feet
mistrust the pavement and your blood tests
turn the doctor's expression grave.

Look up to catch eclipses, gold leaf, comets,
angels, chandeliers, out of the corner of your eye,
join them if you like, learn astrophysics, or
learn folksong, human sacrifice, mortality,
flying, fishing, sex without touching much.
Don't trouble, though, to head anywhere but the sky.

Now it's time to go meet L. for dinner.
