Today was Family Beach Day, a tradition that had kind of fallen by the wayside the past couple of years, but which my sister revived earlier this week. So last night, I left work at 4:45, planning to catch the 5:21 train. This, as it turned out, was a poor decision, as somewhere between 14th St and 18th St, the train I was on had its emergency brake activated. So we sat around for a while and they announced they were trying to fix things. Then about 25 minutes later, they announced that they were pulling in an empty train behind us, and they were going to evacuate us through the empty train and back onto the platform at 14th. That was fine, if a little nervewracking because of the gap between the two trains, but another train pulled in on the express track as soon as we got to 14th St, so that was fine. Except that I missed the 5:21, the 5:41 (my usual train) and the 5:53, because I had to stand on an endless line for a ticket. Right after the 5:53 pulled out, an MTA employee with a handheld ticket machine came around, so I bought my ticket from her, but I still had to wait for the 6:21 train.
In the meantime, I'd texted Marguerite about the plan for today and she said they'd pick me up at 8:30 and don't forget to bring my own food. So after I finally arrived I had to go to King Kullen and buy ham and bread for a sandwich, and then go pick up the pizza we were having for dinner, so I wasn't settled in here last night until 8:30 or so. After leaving my office at 4:45. *weeps*
When I asked my sister if I should bring any baked goods, she said no, a decision she regretted this morning (and which several other people were like, "but why would you say that?" about. heh), so I just relaxed and finished the book I was reading and made sure the next book I wanted to read was cued up on the kindle, since I was bringing that to the beach with me, since it's so much better in the sunlight. Not that it mattered, because I didn't get any reading done.
We got to the beach a little after 9, set up, and hung out. Once everyone else had arrived, we had a nice patch of shade from the umbrellas and all the beach chairs in a circle so we could easily talk to each other instead of all of us being spread out on towels the way we usually are, so we mostly talked while the kids went back and forth to the water, which was beautiful - I don't think I've ever seen the Atlantic that calm and it wasn't even that cold. And also I covered up early so I got some color on my chest and arms but didn't really burn anywhere, which made the rest of the day so much more pleasant. Usually by about 1:30 - 2 pm, I'm ready to go home, but even at 4:15, when we started packing up, it didn't feel like it had been a really long day, just a really nice one.
I took a shower and did some laundry and had Chinese food with the parents when I got back. I tried to nap but it didn't really work out. I'm avoiding tumblr because I haven't seen the leaked TW finale yet, but I'm too sleepy to write. I haven't forgotten your meme responses from yesterday, though. I will totally finish them. Though next time I do a meme, I will pay much more attention before I post it, because yesterday, I didn't catch that I was doing ALL the tropes for each pairing, and that is harder than I expected. Sometimes I don't read as closely as I should. It happens to all of us occasionally.
