Board packets: sent!

Whew.

Last night, while I was drunk!Tumblring (probably the best way to use Tumblr, tbh; I don't think I even noticed if tumblr savior wasn't working),
tygermama asked what comic arc or story would I like to see made into a movie, and since there is already a Red Hood animated movie (and I can't think of who I'd cast as Jason, which is the largest issue for me in a live-action Red Hood movie), and they are making a Winter Soldier movie, and I think Gotham Central would work best as a tv show on HBO, I thought I would like a No Man's Land movie, but one that has Barbara, Helena and Renee as the main/POV characters (especially since Bruce fucks off to Europe to sulk and isn't even around for the first three months of the story), with Alfred and eventually Dick and Cass and Tim and Bruce showing up. Obviously, I'd like a Wonder Woman movie, maybe an adaptation of Gods of Gotham, so it could be a Wonderfam/Batfam crossover, because that would be awesome. Or, of course, a Nightwing movie. Matt Bomer is willing!

I mean, I also want a Black Widow movie and a Captain Marvel movie (Katee Sackhoff said on Twitter that she's game to play Carol! I would be on that like a cheap suit on a used car salesman.) and a T'Challa movie (especially since he is not in the new Avengers cartoon; Chiwetel Ejiofor for T'Challa. YOU KNOW IT WOULD BE AWESOME.).

Then
meinterrupted invited me to join in a livestream watch of The Covenant, which, as you may or may not know, stars Taylor Kitsch and Sebastian Stan. Which means that even though I don't really acknowledge that Taylor Kitsch played Gambit, there is a movie with Gambit and Bucky.

Which is a long way round to talking about X-Men vol. 4, #1, which came out Wednesday and is the much-heralded all-ladies team book. (The Mary Sue Interviews Jeanine Schaefer, Editor of Marvel’s New All-Female X-Men Series).

Now, back in my XMM days - for those of you who are somewhat new to my journal, the first fandom I posted fanfic in was X-Men movieverse, way back in 2000 after X1 came out - and this is back before fandom was on LJ, during the tail-end of the transition from Usenet to mailing lists, and it was a mailing list fandom. Without rehashing a lot of ...stuff that almost no one else cares about or even remembers, let's just say that because of some really unfriendly X-Men comics fans, I swore I would never read an X-Men comic, because fuck you that's why I was writing in the movieverse and that was all the canon I needed to know, and all my fic was clearly labeled that way anyway, etc.

This is the main reason I don't get tetchy when people write MCU fic without regard to the comics. I might be taken aback when reading fic where Natasha and Bucky don't have some history, for example (which is itself a recent retcon), but that is mostly because Natasha and Bucky being undercover lovers during their Soviet assassin days is a retcon I really like and also I ship it pretty hard. But I don't get angry or annoyed or write prissy notes to people who leave it out, because it's not established canon in the movieverse (yet?) and also because good lord, I do not want too much comics canon of either the 616 or Ultimate variety to seep into the movieverse. (I want to continue enjoying Tony Stark, for example, which 616 makes nearly impossible for me.) Separate universes are separate!

I understand some people might be hesitant because it looks like there is all this canon to know, but for the MCU, there's the movies. That's it. (ancillary canon [tie-in comics, deleted scenes etc.] is ancillary, imo, good for picking up bits of stuff you like re: backstory or whatever, but not necessary if you don't like or haven't read. obviously mileage on that varies.)

And also because once I actually started reading comics etc. I realized - with the help of my XMM experience and the DC reboot that stripped away the large majority of what I'd fallen in love with in their universe (thankfully, they can't actually take away all that stuff, even if they want to retcon it out of current existence, and also I'll always have the various animated 'verses), as well as the differences in the MCU itself that I preferred to the comics versions - that I was much happier not privileging a particular writer's (or artist's) interpretation of things, since they are all taking established characters out for a spin the same as we are, except they're getting paid for it and technically creating canon. (I feel like I've posted about this before as Shroedinger's Red Hood - will Jason have red hair or black hair when he loses his helmet? It depends on who is writing/drawing/coloring him.)

ANYWAY.

That is a lot of words and tangents to get to the point that I very pointedly did not read any X-Men comics (of any variety, with or without adjectives), even when I wasn't paying for them, and that has been the case since I first started being fannishly interested in comic book movies. Except then Marvel announced they were doing an (adjectiveless) X-Men book with a team consisting of Storm, Rogue, Kitty, Jubilee, Psylocke, and Rachel Summers(-Grey? Does she hyphenate?) and even though I am not really onboard with Jubilee as a vampire (I just...wtf? I was hoping that would just be forgotten), I decided that I would give this book a shot, because ALL LADIES, ALL THE TIME. Gotta support the side with actual $$$. (I will eventually catch up on the Sif-led Journey Into Mystery for similar reasons and also because SIF.)

It finally came out this week and I enjoyed it. I don't think any real background knowledge is necessary - I mean, you know who the X-Men are, and it's easy enough to wiki up the characters you're not familiar with - and the art is really lovely and I'm interested in seeing where the story goes. And I liked seeing Rogue and Kitty and Storm et al. being competent and teamy.

In non-comics news, I also super enjoyed the Mets sweeping the Yankees this year. There are going to be very few highlights to this Mets season, so I am going to ride this one for a while. *g*
