all coiled up and hissing

Another ridiculously hectic day at work, the highlight of which was a member of the NY City Council asking the Commissioner of Health what he plans to do about the 17-year cicada problem we're going to have this year, because kids are scared of them. Since the commissioner is not Moses, I'm not sure what the expected answer was, and neither was the ( Read more... )

One of the bug killing companies is selling something that's supposed to kill the cicadas in your yard.

And here's the thing: Those kids can't possibly be more scared of cicadas than I am. I hate them so much it would require interpretive dance to fully explain my hatred. I hate and fear them and their very existence makes me ill.

But they *are* actually harmless and as long as they stay out of my house, they're safe from me.

I'll just be, y'know, hiding under my bed.

Yeah, I get being scared of them, especially if they swarm? But they are pretty harmless, and the city's animal control resources are better spent elsewhere imo.

Oh well, I suppose it was less eyerolling than last year, when one of them voiced some conspiracy theory about fluoride in the water.

LOL'd at the Moses reference.

Back when I was a wee!Kita, we had an invasion that coincided with one of the Jewish holidays that typically is celebrated with outdoor festivities. I will never ever forget the feeling of a dozen cicadas in my hair and up my skirt. Needless to say, the festivities were cut short and there were a whole lotta Moses jokes.

OTOH, it does beat boils and the water turning to blood.

At yesterday's bbq, my sister was telling the story about how last time, one got tangled in my niece's hair and she freaked the fuck out, which I can totally understand, because EEK! but overall, yeah. I mean, I might like frogs better, but out of the choices, it's definitely better than boils or blood.

Man, give me cicadas over mosquitoes or gnats any day. If we must be swarmed by insects at least it's by ones that don't bite.
