The year-end TV meme:

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2012?

Of new shows, Elementary, Arrow, Last Resort, Legend of Korra, Ultimate Spider-man, Once Upon a Time; of existing shows I jumped onto, Teen Wolf, Homeland (which I am still trying to catch up with. DO NOT SPOIL ME.), Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2012?

I distanced myself emotionally from Fringe, though I'm still watching it, because I want to see what the ending will be.

I stopped watching Castle, mostly out of indifference, which pains me, because NATHAN FILLION. But I understand it's gotten better? Because I was just not feeling it for a long time there. I would let it pile up on my DVR and then delete it.

I gave up on Last Resort, mostly because it was canceled so I'm not going to spend the time.

I gave up on Ultimate Spider-man because ugh, there are only so many episodes I can stand where we see the team not get along and then have to learn that working together as a team is a good thing! Bah. I want a show about Peter Parker (ideally, I'd like a show about Peter as an adult, juggling a marriage and a teaching job with being a superhero, but I know I'm never gonna get it). Not that. (Though I will give props for frog!Thor. Always a blast.)

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2012? Why?

Nashville. I watched and liked the pilot but haven't continued to watch it.

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2013?

Uh. I keep thinking I should give Lost Girl a try, or Haven, or maybe give Warehouse 13 another shot. And maybe Nashville. Also, Bomb Girls and the Bletchley Circle, if I can get hold of them. And maybe I will finally watch The Pacific. (Certainly it's time for a Band of Brothers rewatch. Hmm...) And should I watch Cowboy Bebop? Is that a thing I will like? I bounced off Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood the first couple times I tried, but maybe I will give it another shot.

Which TV show impressed you least in 2012?

I really disliked how Fringe repositioned Peter as the hero of the show. Bah, I say. And also feh.

I wish Legend of Korra had engaged more with the issues it set up, rather than spending more time on the love triangle stuff, which was also not handled particularly well.

Which TV show did you enjoy the most in 2012?

Community, with The Good Wife a close second. Ooh, and Young Justice. When it was actually airing, it was surprisingly good. Of the new shows, Elementary. ♥JOAN♥

And that's as good a lead-in as any to last night's Elementary.

I really loved how they handled Sherlock meeting Joan's family, because he certainly was manipulating events to try to get Joan to stay on with him, but there's no way he could have managed to get her mother to agree - and even encourage Joan to continue on the path to becoming a detective - for the reasons she did. That was all between her and Joan, and I love that. It wasn't that Mrs. Watson suddenly saw that being a sober companion was a good and noble thing, it was that she saw being Sherlock's investigative partner was sparking Joan up and making her happy. And that was an unexpected and awesome turn of events.

I also really like the way the AV Club reviewer framed it:
As opposed to allowing Sherlock to relapse (and thus justify Watson's continued presence in his life), Elementary seems much more concerned with Watson's personal agency. The point is not that Sherlock necessarily needs Watson, but rather that Watson might well find Sherlock's line of work to be fulfilling. As Watson has gradually honed her deductive skills over the course of the series' first 10 episodes, the argument for her continued presence in his life hasn't been solely predicated on her value to him, or even on his value to her. Rather, it has been about how the work is something Joan values in her own life, and how the sense of accomplishment she gets from assisting Sherlock-both as a sober companion and as a detective in her own right-is meaningful not simply to their relationship but to her own personal journey. Also, this episode made me want a White Collar crossover. Peter and Joan rolling their eyes at their "consultants." JOAN AND DIANA FLIRTING. SOMEONE SHOULD WRITE THIS NOW. Ahem.

Also, anyone know where I can get an icon, preferably of Joan, but I'll accept Joan with Sherlock.
