working from the gun

Oct 28, 2012 14:08

I baked Mark Bttman's basic sandwich bread this morning (here's the whole wheat version). It was really easy - I used honey, and olive oil, and did it all by hand and it forms a nice dough pretty quickly.

I think it will work well for sandwiches, because it's definitely got a tight, soft crumb, without the hard crust and big holes that artisan bread gives you. I love the artisan bread a lot, but it doesn't really work well for sandwiches.

Anyway. I did that, and I made bacon, which set off my smoke alarm. Eep! At least I know it works?

So they're closing the subway and the LIRR as of 7 pm tonight and stopping the buses at 9 pm. I'm guessing I won't be going to work tomorrow, though I haven't gotten any official word from the bosses yet. I mean, I think they just want to close everything down, which makes sense, given that they're talking about 80 mph winds and stuff (and I can't get to work without the subway). I think being in the city is probably better in terms of not losing power than being in the boroughs or the 'burbs, but I have some applesauce and some popcorn and some bread, and I'm going to make something for dinner tonight that I can eat for a couple of days if it comes to that.

I hope everyone in the path of the storm is tucked up somewhere safe before it starts. As long as I have power and the cable doesn't go out, I'll be around online.

eta: Just got the official word that my office is closed tomorrow. Whew.
