each day you are bound to lose something

ranalore asked about my Robin icons, so this is an all Robin (and former Robin) icon post. I find it a little scary that I have enough Robin icons to fill all six slots (and still have two left over, that I discussed yesterday).

(icon by

keyword: everybody knows the dice are loaded
Basically, if anyone ever says to me, "Why do you ship Dick/Jason?" I will point them to this icon. I do not know where it comes from (it's the cover image of something, possibly called The Outsiders? Only not featuring Pony and Johnny, I guess) and I do not know how or why they are apparently working together, but I like that they are, and that they are wet and hot and BAMFy and daring you to take them on, you dumb fuck, how could you possibly win?

And I imagine immediately after this takes place they have ridiculously hot half-clothed sex up against the wall and Jason bitches about the rain and Dick tells him to quit complaining and bites his lower lip to shut him up and the rain has a metallic taste on his sweaty skin. Ahem.

The keyword comes from Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows," because I think it's very much a Gotham kind of song, especially from Jason's POV, and it kind of expresses his willingness to cross lines that Dick and Bruce won't (though I do wonder about Dick's attitude towards guns, because he became a cop at one point, didn't he? So in his view, it's okay to carry a gun and use lethal force when you've got official sanction? That the only reason Gordon tolerates Batman and his crew of vigilantes is because they don't cross that line? Because that is a reason I could grudgingly accept, if not like, the whole no killing bad guys and no using guns thing, far more than the shady morality of "we'll step right up to that line and beat the crap out of them and hang them off buildings for information, but we won't put a toe over"). And also, I think I was listening to the Concrete Blonde version when I uploaded the icon. *snerk* But that weary cynicism seems like a Jason thing, even though he clearly still has the heart of an idealist underneath. An idealist who is willing to cut the heads off drug dealers and poison sex traffickers. The world is a mess and he just needs to rule it! Except he doesn't really want to rule it so much as cauterize the wounds.

I've said this to various people in comments, but my issues with Jason's methods aren't that he uses guns or kills people, it's that he apparently funds his operations with money he gets from drug dealers and pimps in the form of kickbacks and protection. I would much rather he be a straight-up killer-for-hire, because it's all well and good to keep drug dealers from selling to kids, but it completely ignores the bigger picture of how the drug trade is killing our cities and it's a systemic failure that can't be cured by taking low-level lieutenants - or even major players - off the street.

Actually, now that I think on it, I think Jason's model of operations should be Omar Little. Kill the dealers and take their money, but don't keep running the corners as the kingpin.

And wow, that was a lot of tl;dr about an icon. I almost quoted "The Untouchables," because Jason clearly subscribes to the Chicago way, but I womanfully restrained myself.

keyword: that's when I reach for my revolver
Because it's like sex when they fight! Because of how much Jason really wants Dick to understand what he's doing! Because I really like Jason's knife and Dick's escrima sticks! (Never ever underestimate the appeal of a poky stick.) It'd be better if Jason were just wearing his domino instead of that dumbass helmet, but the colors contrast nicely, so it's okay.

Keyword from the Mission of Burma song of the same name, which also seems kind of suitable for Jason ("once I had my heroes / once I had my dreams / but all of that has changed now / they've turned things inside out / the truth is not so comfortable, no") even though he's not actually using a gun in the icon (I think there's another similar image where you can see he's also got a gun to Dick's head with his other hand?). It seems to me that Jason's revolver-reaching threshold is pretty low.

keyword: do not confuse yourself with your reflection (slightly truncated due to character limits)
I have this icon because it's pretty and because I felt like sometimes I wanted to talk about Dick himself without using a shippy icon. The keyword is a line I love from a poem I love: "Travel Advisory" by Michael Dumanis, and it seemed appropriate given the number of foils Dick seems to have, and also how much he wants to live up to Bruce but needs to remember not to be him etc.

(icon by me, from this scan provided by silveronthetree)
keyword: the subject of schoolgirl fantasies
Because everybody loves Dick! And his life is hard, yo. Pun totally intended. I find this icon hilarious. It's funny 'cause it's true. I'm just sad I couldn't fit in his facepalm over the whole situation. (In the linked scan, they're having a team meeting and instead of paying attention, Supergirl is doodling what's on the icon.)

(icon by me)
keyword: hope enough for the both of us
They have a special bond! He's her closest friend! He believes in her when she doesn't believe in herself! I think they are adorable and I totally ship it. The keyword is a paraphrase from something he says in "The End" (I think?) - she says she can't hope that they'll win against Trigon, and he says it's okay, he'll hope enough for the both of them.

(icon by me)
keyword: we could be heroes
This is from the Teen Titans movie, right before they finally kiss (in the rain; clearly, I was not the only one who imprinted early on that scenario. *snerk*). I really love Starfire in the cartoon (I don't know anything about her in the comics, except her costume is ridiculously skimpy and she has a lot of hair) and they are adorable together (and yes, I ship it!), so I was happy they finally kissed after Robin realized he was being a dumbass by saying they couldn't have a romantic relationship and still be heroes. Hence the keyword.

This is the poem that keyword comes from:

Travel Advisory

Do not endeavor
to snapshot the locals.

Do not trust anything
that could snap shut.

Try to pass quickly
through slipshod locales.

Do not give alms.
Make no eye contact.

Do not confuse
yourself with your reflection,

this span of ruins with a system,
this inn with a place to come back to.

Rein in the impulse to build
a new city from these scattered twigs.

Do not poke around in the abandoned
houses of the damaged village.

Do not get curious
about shiny metal in the grass.

Do not plant kisses
on the blind accordionist.

Leave the mermaid alone,
it is not meant to be.

You will cause offense.
You will not hear the knob turn.

You will wake to find stones in your mouth
and a lake in each eye.

Do not ring the concierge.
Do not search for the consulate.

Regard every centimeter
of ground as suspicious.

Trains are essentially useless.
The timetable lies.

Each day you are bound
to lose something.

Each day you are bound
to lose something.

Do not meander too far
from a given road's shoulder.

Owning a car does not give
you the clearance to drive.

Michael Dumanis
