Leaving aside issues of 'should' or whatever, I have two answers to this question. First is, The Wire, if only so you can see what the hype is about, but mostly because yes, it really is that good. It's dense and heartbreaking and full of characters and scenes and stories that will imprint themselves indelibly on your heart, your soul, and your memory. It's a scathing indictment of our institutions, a tragedy of Euripidean proportions, a world where the players might change but the game never does.
And then, as an antidote, as something to give you hope that public service can be meaningful and effect change, watch The West Wing. It's idealized as hell, and yes, it can be smug and preachy, but week in and week out for the first three seasons, at least, it provided smart, uplifting comic and tragic stories about characters I came to love, and think you will too.
I saw someone in my network list MASH, and that would probably also do the job in one show that these two do together, which is give you a look at the best and worst of what US society can produce, and make you laugh, cry, and think in the process.

Day 12 - An episode you’ve watched more than 5 times
Day 13 - Favorite childhood show
Day 14 - Favorite male character

Day 18 - Favorite title sequence
Day 19 - Best TV show cast
Day 20 - Favorite kiss
Day 21 - Favorite ship
Day 22 - Favorite series finale
Day 23 - Most annoying character
Day 24 - Best quote
Day 25 - A show you plan on watching (old or new)
Day 26 - OMG WTF? Season finale
Day 27 - Best pilot episode
Day 28 - First TV show obsession
