I just finished reading The Kite Runner and I really liked it.
While a couple of the coincidences made me groan (the beggar in the street knew Amir's mother? Really? And the Talib who is holding Sohrab is Aseef? Really?), and Sohrab's attempted suicide (the one surprising thing that happened) kept me from loving it completely, I really liked it. The writing is clear and evocative, the emotions unforced, and the characters - Baba and Amir, Ali and Hassan - endeared themselves to me (even Amir, who, I must admit I wanted to dislike after the way he treats Hassan). I can see why there was such a fuss over this book - the detailing of a lost way of life in Kabul is beautiful and heartbreaking, and the very end made me tear up just a little.
I don't think there are many surprises in the story, but I still found it moving and highly readable. And, uh, in light of the warnings discussion, this is a book that would come with numerous warnings, if books did, so if you haven't read it and you're the type who needs warnings, be wary.

On my trip home this evening, the metal hook that holds the strap of my bag to the bag itself managed to lodge itself into my pants pocket, and I cannot get it unhooked. *facepalm* I am going to have to transfer all my stuff to a different bag. Sigh.

In other news, 723 words on remix number 2. I know how I want it to go in my head, so hopefully I can get it all down on paper soon. That way I can be ready for pinch hits.
