I don't get into fandoms because of the fandom or the fic - I need the source to ping for me first.
Yeah, that. I usually hear about interesting new stuff first on my f-list (not least because it will take some time before US or UK series or movies are aired or promoted here, if they ever are, it's not like I'd see any ads first), but then check things out, and only get into the fandom if the source works for me. And I rarely ever loose a fandom completely.
Right. I count on my flist to keep me informed, but I also find things out elsewhere - I read EW and a few tv review blogs etc, so I knew about Leverage before anyone on my flist mentioned it (I believe there was a "You are all fired for not telling me!" post way back when I first learned Chris Kane and Aldis Hodge were shooting a pilot together, and I learned that from Kung Fu Monkey's blog - he's a writer on the show).
And yeah, with those exceptions, I've never really given up a fandom completely.
I'm not going to worry about the brother spoiler, I'm expecting it to be a mislead of some sort -- I kind of like Anna though, it's interesting element: a rogue Angel, wonder if she's connected to Ausiello's spoiler from last week though?

Hey, the most time-economical way of getting into a fandom is just to read the squee posts and perhaps a fic or two and bypass the source text--I feel I could pass SGA or SPN or Merlin at O Level without actually ever having seen more than a couple (or even sometimes, ANY) episodes.
PS--since I don't watch SPN, I used Occam's Razor to conclude that Anna is really their brother.

Oh, sure, I have at times during remix wondered if I couldn't bang out an SGA fic when I couldn't find a pinch hitter. I've seen maybe an episode and a half, and I've betaed for a couple of people, in addition to being inundated with squee on my flist.

I never got into SGA because I was bitter about the Great Popslash Migration and I got real stubborn about it. By the time the next wave of popslashers left and moved to SPN, I was more resigned and receptive. And, you know, Dean. I couldn't hold out forever, I'm only human.
And I like the idea that Anna is their long, lost brother.
Oh, yes, I have long considered SGA my fannish nemesis, because it stole close friends from me. Er, I mean, we are still friends, but no longer sharing fandoms, and I was definitely bitter about that.
And I guess I should have been more specific, because sometimes it is fandom-in-general who point me at a source, but I don't consider myself in the fandom-specific until I've had some interaction with the source.
And yes, Dean! I do not know how he hasn't conquered fandom completely and utterly. Only 36.5 more hours til new show!
Oh, also, Anna as their long-lost brother would make Wincest canon! How HILARIOUS would that be? (I think Azazel/Mary has to be considered Campbell-cest, no?)
I got what you meant about fandom-in-general and fandom-specific, I think. I guess I considered that I was sort of in the SPN fandom before I wanted to be got into the source because half my friends were and I remember watching the season 1 finale just I could know what my flist would be talking about all that summer, even though I had no idea what was going on.
