(Which is not to say Sam doesn't want to save people from evil, but in and of itself, it's rarely been his primary motivation.)

So very true. Even his explanation for going after Lilith was not "it's the right thing to do" but "payback".

Spot on analysis. I don't know if my faith in the writers extends back to foreshadowing in season 1, but it'd be cool if they did have this in mind all along.

I don't necessarily believe they knew they were going to do it? But they did seed it in (whether intentionally or not, who knows? I know when I write, I sometimes do that and come back at the end and go, "How did I know I was going to need that?", and while I don't believe there is a detailed plan, I am willing to go with the idea that Kripke did have some sort of apocalyptic angel v. demon showdown in mind from early on.

It's very satisfying to have a show where we can make this type of speculation without intellectual embarassment, and with emotional conviction (if you get what I mean; I'm finding it hard to think around the smug glee perfusing my body and mind). Cosmology FTW!

Yeah, I don't know that I think the writing staff is actually up to pulling this off well, but I like that they're trying.

Dean will have to save Sam, or failing that, kill him.
I think that this dilemma, in the end, will be what the whole series is about. I'd like to say that the reverse could be true, but part of What It Means to Be Sam seems to be that he can *never* save Dean, which... is kind of a shame.

Nonetheless, I am *psyched* for S4! That was a great premise to start the season and turn the whole series topsy-turvy. I like that the mytharc is suddenly and absolutely no longer a one-brotherly-sided story. Well done.

Well, Sam did save Dean in "Faith" (and in "Scarecrow"), but the cost was one Dean didn't really want to bear. But yes, I think the scenario at base is Dean saves Sam so Sam saves the world.

I dig it. I still would like to see a Winchester vs Winchester cage match, though. I really liked the Jared vs Shapeshifter!Dean fight in "Skin", and would love to see it on an epic scale, too.

I am a big fluffy puppy - one of them going evil would really hurt! Like, possibly even more than Surprise/Innocence/Passion/Becoming levels of hurt.

Also, I am still hesitant to believe the SPN writers can really handle this kind of story.

I think Mary was another child of Azazel

I think she was too. I'm just partial to the idea that the powers are Sam's, not some demonic gift.

I'd like that too, just not sure you'll get it.

Well, I don't think he was born into this, so much as, er, removed from hell to handle it? I'd like that better, anyway. That heaven saw an opportunity to score points off the bad guys *and* put some kind of check on Sam's burgeoning prince of hell possibilities, if Castiel is, in fact, a messenger from God, and God is in fact the force of good in this universe. Um. Not that I would expect him/her not to be on a WB/CW show. I mean, this is the network that gave us Seventh Heaven. (as an aside, how much do I love that on Reaper, the gay demon who rebelled against Satan went to heaven when he was killed? THIS MUCH! So if they could do it on Reaper, which was on everyone's radar last year, maybe SPN, which doesn't get much press, could pull off a Gaimanesque rejection of both God and the Devil at the end of this story arc.)

I am just throwing scenarios out, mostly because I really don't like predestination and all of that, but possibly once Sam was tagged by the demon, the other side decided to recruit from the same family.
