Summary: Niko, Evan and Adam are meeting with the wolves.
Somewhere in the distance a wolf howled. Nikolai shivered as a cold breeze crept down his spine. He stood and doused the fading fire with his wand.
“The wolves are out.”
“I hate dogs.”
It had been a long night, for everyone, staying out in the wild to wait for the wolves to show. They weren't known for their consistency and, on several occasions, Fenrir or his men hadn't bothered to turn up at all, making them even more disliked amongst the Death Eaters.
Tonight, Nikolai was out with Evan and Adam; it was the latter's first time out on one of these trips. He'd rather have gone and visited the vampires, after what Rabastan had told him about their hospitality. Then again, he'd rather track down werewolves than giants. The dogs would just turn you into one of them, the brutes would smash your head in if didn't get on with them.
“I still don't think it was good idea to bringing him.”
“Good idea to bring him,” Evan corrected automatically, almost knowing beforehand that his father was about to make that mistake. He shrugged at the comment, “Needs to be introduced to them at some point.”
“Still not good idea.”
There was a snapping of branches to the right of the opening the men were sat in. Adam jumped to his feet, his hand twitching through his hair. Evan raised an eyebrow at the put-out fire, twirling a burnt twig in his fingers, not bothering to look up.
“Easy, Adam,” he murmured, “The wolves are insane things. Sudden movements might set them off howling.”
Neither Rosier liked Fenrir. The man was beyond crazy. He was only just in the limitations of insanity that could be used by the Dark Lord. The problem with using him was he just added to the wolf population and, well, that was never a good thing.
More snapping branches. Silhouettes stepped into the clearing. Evan sighed, tossed the stick onto the pile of ashes and stood. Nikolai stepped forward towards the figures who approached from out of the darkness, the two younger Death Eaters stayed a few steps back.
“Mmm, fresh meat,” one of the figures drawled. It wasn't Fenrir, this wolf sounded more civilised.
“Now, now, Lucien, don't scare the boy off.” Evan recognised the more course voice to be the one of Fenrir, his throat damaged by endless attempts on his life. Fenrir took another step forward, so his face was lit up by the moonlight. “Why are you here? I don't need checking up on.”
“The politician isn't dead... bitten,” Nikolai replied, his face not conveying any emotion. He liked to stay detached emotionally from conversations with werewolves, otherwise he'd have a permanent expression of disgust on his face.
“I had an idea.”
“That wasn't part of the plan,” Evan answered with, he could see where this was going.
The human hound's lip twitched as he shifted his gaze to Evan for a second and then back to Nikolai.
“I had an idea that, well... we're doing an awful lot for you Death Eaters. And we're not getting that much in return. What else can you offer us?”
“We offer nothing else. You won't do it? The vampires will,” Nikolai's top lip curled into a slight snarl; the gesture was mirrored by the men opposite.
“We're giving you enough,” Evan added, thinking that it would be easier to just keep the werewolves on their side rather than lose hundreds of easily disposable soldiers. Adam's hand twitched through his hair and he shifted his weight, looking as if he was ready to attack something. One opposite growled openly. Evan arched an eyebrow.
“Final offer,” Nikolai stated, ignoring the potential startings of a fight.
“We take the boy,” Fenrir decided, shooting a glance at Adam who immediately stiffened and stared at the back of Nikolai's head with worry.
The Russian considered the proposition for a second. Fenrir smiled slightly, thinking he was going to gain a new toy. But Nikolai cracked his neck and adjusted his coat, a sign Evan knew to mean that he'd made up his mind.
“We're giving you enough,” he said, repeating his sons words. “This meeting is over. You either change or kill the politician. We're done here.”
Adam scuttled after Nikolai, confirming the fact that he'd much rather have a meeting with vampires than werewolves.
An eyebrow slightly raised in delight, Evan nodded to the figures smugly. “Boys.”
