i love the Dekalb Farmer's market. it is in Decatur, maybe a 5-10 minute drive from the apartment. they have everything a person could possibly want. the funny thing is, they have regular produce and organic produce for just about the same price (only a few cents more for the organic) and of course significantly less than Whole Foods or Publix. they have a whole wall of dried herbs and spices, plus a whole row of fresh herbs. when i walk through the rows, i smile so big. everything smells so fresh!
i didn't really "need" anything but decided i would check out the farmers market on a week day. wow! that place a lot easier to take yr time at during the week. its a mad house on the weekend, as you might imagine.
being vegan, nuts are a staple food since they provide protein, healthy fat and make a creamy addition to food when ground up. i stocked up on hazelnuts (blanched), walnuts, pecans, pine nuts (one of my fave) and cashews . . . and get this, all organic! nuts, as they are, tend to be on the pricey side but they were only a few cents more than non-organic nuts you get at Publix, but way cheaper than organic nuts at Whole Foods. plus, i would rather give my money to the farmer's market than a chain store.
so, plans for all these lovely nuts??? the cashews will be thrown into stir frys, hazelnuts and pine nuts in pasta dishes, walnuts in salads and pecans for sweet baked goods. of course, they are for munching or maybe i'll make some granola for breakfast.
