I was thinking that maybe Viola is a little more scholarly than her brother, and when he got into a private, prestigious school, he felt intimidated and immediately begged Viola to switch with him in order to keep up good grades for him. Or something along those lines, just something so that she has to pose as a boy, as her twin.
