Mornings

Woke up at 6.30 and went out to our little backyard, which now contains many herbs in pots - thyme, oregano, coriander, curly and flat leaf parsley, basil, and Greek basil. There is a tomato plant that keeps on growing (this is its third season), and also a lemon tree in a large pot that hasn't shown any signs of fruit after a year, but perhaps we ( Read more... )

Did you plant your lemon tree a year ago? It's best if it spends its first few seasons becoming established and developing a strong root system - Peter Cundall advises removing flowers in the first year to ensure this. Lots of fertiliser in spring and autumn and a good layer of mulch will keep it happy, and I'm sure you'll have lovely fruit next season.

It was planted about a year and a half ago I think. If you say it needs a strong root system I think we will plant it in a deeper pot - the one we have is probably a little shallow, although it is wide. Thanks for the advice! I'll make sure we fertilise it and prune its flowers for the coming weeks. You've also reminded me that it is time to go get mulch from the council nursery that provides it for free :)

How is your garden going?

If it's been there for 18 months I think you can let it flower. Is it otherwise fairly happy and healthy?

With the mulch, just make sure it doesn't touch the trunk - leave a little gap to avoid rot.

Our garden is going okay, although Preston seems to be plagued with all sorts of bugs! There are some sections of the garden I can grow nothing in, because plants get eaten down to nothing by some ravenous creature. And someone pinched our eggplants! I've just received my spring seed order from Digger's Club, so I'm feeling inspired again. Fingers crossed we'll have a kinder summer this year.

Hope all is well with you and that you've having some nice calm time in your little garden. Is there enough room to do a sun salutation out there? The whole thing makes so much more sense outside, for me.

The stems are sturdy, although the leaves are on the yellow-green side. We'll see how it goes this spring. Thanks for tip re: mulch.

I can't believe someone pinched your eggplants! Grow yer own aubergines, people! I hope the weather turns around too - I really don't know how Victoria would look after another searing summer :/

There is a room to roll out a yoga mat for sun salutations outside and I've been contemplating starting exactly that. Outdoor yoga makes *perfect* sense.
