Well, that was interesting...
I didn't watch the recap that aired at 8 o'clock, choosing instead to watch the first hour of the American Idol finale (it was cool to see Al Jarreau up there, I didn't know that he was still around). I heard later that Taylor had won, which is the result that I was hoping for. At 9 I changed over to channel 7, and spent the following two hours holding my television antenna at an odd angle so that I could see what was happening through the static and distortion that comes from living in a basement. I didn't really think that they answered all the questions they promised to resolve, I thought that they were going to tell us what the Dharma Initiative is but I didn't feel that they did. I also thought that they were going to tell us who the "Others" are, but aside from giving us a bigger glimpse into them (and telling us that Kelvin Inman considered them to be "hostiles") we didn't really learn anything that wasn't also shown in the penultimate episode of the season. It was interesting to see that the "button" does have a purpose (albeit one that could be automated rather than executed manually every 108 minutes), although it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Desmond hadn't "blown the dam." Speaking of Desmond, somebody else on LJ mentioned that his full name is "Desmond David Hume" which is another philosophy reference (the others being the names of John Locke and Danielle Rousseau). I wonder how this will play out, the only thing I remember about David Hume is that he advocated monarchy or at least some kind of strong authority that placed limits on democracy (that's right, isn't it?) and that I didn't like the stuff of his that I read in college. Apparently the creators of this show must have been paying attention in their Modern Philosophy classes, or at least in the part where they talked about social contract philosophy. I wonder what the bright light was that blanketed the island when Desmond turned the key, it must have been something extremely powerful to put off that amount of radiation. The part at the end was interesting, I thought that maybe they had gone into commercials but then they came in to the window of the research station with those two guys speaking (at first I thought that it was Spanish, but it did sound wierd to me and now I think that it was Portuguese). I wonder if anything will come of the fact that Ms. Widmore apparently knows that they're out there.
Hopefully the new season will answer some more questions, while also creating some new ones for us to think about.
