I really want to vent to someone about work, but I've learned recently to never complain to anyone ever while on the job, even if its off the clock. So you fine people get to hear about it.
- My manager is on vacation. So, the manager for our other shelter is filling in remotely, and she has an entirely different set of pet peeves, all of which I seem to be triggering. So I'm looking really terrible to her right now, and that scares me.
- One of the two shelter volunteering coordinators is also on vacation, meaning the remaining coordinator has to take over her duties. Now, this secondary volunteer coordinator is also responsible for animal boarding reservations for 5 days a week. I'm responsible for the other 2 days. Now, my two days are Thursday and Friday. I checked the inbox for reservations yesterday, and it literally hadn't been checked since last Sunday. Now, if she had asked me to help pick up the slack before this happened, I could have handled it. But instead, I had to respond to 20+ emails in a single day, when I'm used to responding to 3-4, tops. Thusly I didn't get my work done for the day.
- For the past week, I've been doing morning cleanup for a litter of 5 pit bull/labrador mix puppies. That is, scrubbing away 15 hours worth of poop from a 10x10 room with a textured floor. I wrenched my back doing it yesterday. Its feeling somewhat better today, thankfully, but it still hurts quite a bit to bend over.
- One of our Canine Associates was recently transferred to our other shelter. So, despite the fact that we've beaten that shelter at adoption numbers for 2 months in a row, they now have 4 Canine Associates, and we have 2. So I have to take the brunt of complaints from customers who are angry because nobody is available to show them a dog.
Honestly, as much as I like this job, I get really, really sick of the lack of communication between departments, the general laissez-faire attitude of the managers, and of all the different directions I get pulled in. I guess that's par for the course for a non-profit organization, but if not for all of the wonderful animals I meet, and my extremely slim chances of finding a better job, I would have run away screaming months ago.
