GLOOOOOM

*waves* June Gloom is certainly living up to its name.Yesterday, morning walkies occurred in a fine mist that got as heavy as sprinkling, but mostly it was just grey and cold and blech. Today, morning walkies were grey but dry and reasonably warm, but the grey turned cold and drippy while I was on the bus to work and intensified into light rain. ( Read more... )

You know, I've never heard of June Gloom before, but it is DEFINITELY a thing, isn't it?

Between the May Gray and the June Gloom, we definitely have less than glorious springs here, but at least we have cute nicknames for sad (and SADD-inducing) weather. However, this week has been even more consistently gray and damp than usual, and everybody has been dragging.

I always picture Southern California as a 72* paradise with few, if any, changes across seasons. I must admit that it's hard for me to imagine it grey! (Of course... I've only ever been in late summer, and it's been YEARS since I've been that far south in the state.)

Weather has such a deep effect on all of us, whether we know it or not. I realized during my first year in a warm climate that I just couldn't handle it; without face-hurting cold snaps and snows, I had this eerie sense that time wasn't passing, and it drove me a little bit nuts.

Your impression isn't that far off, to be honest. People put on down coats when the mercury falls below 50F, and I acknowledge that's ridiculous, and yet I also have a nice light down coat that sometimes comes out when frost threatens. And the summers can get hot, especially inland, but are usually quite nice, if not cool.

Heh, my sister has expressed similar incredulity that I like living in a place that doesn't have winter. I reckon I got sufficient winter to last a lifetime going to college in Chicago. One February, we saw the sun exactly thrice, and usually only for an hour or two. No thank you!

It's funny, I like the feeling of timelessness the almost-always-nice weather brings. Plus, I've been here for long enough that seasonal markers like the jacarandas blooming, Santa Ana winds and the like, help mark seasons as well as the first snowfall did.

True. The markers of change are much more subtle.

I think the part of winter I like best is cross-country skiing across lakes when there's a full moon. I'd take books with me as a kid, and it would be bright enough for me to read by moonlight reflecting off all the white snow around me.

That sounds magical. Also cold! *giggles* The closest we got was night-skating on the frozen pond sometimes. I'll never forget the ping-crack of the ice settling that startled people who were new to it.

I love that ping-crack! Also the low whoom-whoom-whoom of one of those cracks that shoots across a lake with 10" of ice or more. It's simultaneously the quietest and loudest sound of winter.
