Requiem for an Oldsmobile

Neither of our cars has been in exactly prime condition for some time. The '87 station wagon is already on its second transmission, leaks coolant, and has a malfunctioning drivers' seat belt and air conditioning, and sometimes the wiper fluid won't stop spraying. The '94 Toyota has a slow but steady oil leak (we have absorbent material underneath it) since a mechanic we no longer patronize blew all of our seals by overfilling the oil and replaced all of them for free except the main seal, which involves ~$400 in labor.

The wagon's coolant leak took a turn for the worse, so we finally took it in. Lo and behold, there are a host of things wrong with it that will cost a total of $2300 to fix. We figure the poor thing has suffered long enough. We had a few gaskets replaced to stop the worst of the leaking and asked them not to do the work. It's time to start looking for a newer car.

Having moved recently, we were very glad to have the wagon, but at the same time, it's much less expensive to rent a U-Haul for a day for $50 than to drive a gas-guzzler year-round, so we'll probably be getting something small and relatively fuel-efficient. We are also cheapskates, so we'll be looking at certified pre-owned vehicles rather than brand-new ones. We have some savings left over from purchasing Chez 42, so we shouldn't have to go into debt if we choose wisely.

In happier news, our Friday and Saturday performances of the Mozart Requiem have gone spectacurlarly and very well, respectively, and we received an extremely good review from my favorite local music critic, Ken Herman. Incidently, he's still my favorite even when he doesn't give us good reviews :D

Today, Mr. 42 and I having brunch with djwong before heading over to Copley for our final Requiem. Quite fitting for our ultimate performance to be on All Saint's/All Souls/Día de los Muertos, the day that Mozart's Requiem has reportedly been performed by choirs all over the world since the composer's death in 1791.

Right, off to do the far less sacred task of finalizing my fantasy football rosters for today.

Love to all,
