“Why do you love him?”

Nick nearly jumped out of his skin at the question.  He’d thought Sarah was asleep, tuckered out by the combined stress of resurrection and Sam appearing at their front door.  “What?”

“It’s a serious question, Nick.  Why do you love him?”  She turned herself around so she could face him, leaving the place her body had been touching his too cold for Nick’s comfort.

“I don’t.”

Sarah smiled.  “Yes, you do.  I’ve been watching.”

The former vessel felt himself blush.  Of course she had.  “Are you mad?”

“Why would I be mad?  I’m happy for you.  You deserve a second chance.”

“That’s why I’m going back with you.”

She frowned, pulling away, putting more space between them.  “No, you’re not.  Dean needs you here.”

“He doesn’t,” Nick said, shaking his head.  “We were just lonely.  But now I’ve got you, and he’s got Sam.  Things can go back to the way they were.”

“Why do you love him, Nick?”

“I told you -”

“You never were very good at lying.  And I need you to understand this, honey.  I’ve been watching you.  Both of you.  You need each other more than you’ll ever know.  If you go with me, you’ll regret it until the end of time.  So I need to know, because I want to help you both.”

Nick sighed.  He’d missed this, he way Sarah had of mentally and emotionally bullying him into doing whatever she wanted.  She was smart, and it was times like this that proved it.

“I don’t love him,” he said.  “I love you.”

“Why do you like him, then?”

He shook his head.  “I don’t know.  He saved me, for one thing.  He didn’t have to do that.  And then he took me in, drove me home.  He cared enough to try and find out what had happened without making me tell him everything.  He does things to make it all easier for me without being asked.”  He sighed, dropping his gaze to the bed where he’d sat himself to watch his wife sleep.  “Sometimes, I look at him, and I just see this kid who’s so hurt and scared and he doesn’t even know if he’s doing the right thing, but he’s trying.  There are times when he looks at me like he thinks I’m gonna hit him or yell at him.  He’ll wrap himself around me at night and not let go, like I might leave.  And the look on his face when I thank him, or tell him he did good… it breaks my heart sometimes.”

“Good.  Now, why do you love him?”

“Because he doesn’t look at me like I’m a monster.  Because he knows what I did and what I said and he doesn’t blame me for it.”  Nick looked up and met his wife’s eyes, a shaky smile forming on his lips.  “He reminds me of my family, sometimes.  And I miss them.  I miss that.  He treats me like I’m something special, instead of something evil.  Sometimes I think I might be taking advantage of him.”

“But you don’t love him?” Sarah asked, and Nick knew that expression.  It was the one that said she was right.  He was wrong.

“Not like I love you,” he whispered.

She smiled.  “Dean’s not me, though, is he?”  Nick shook his head.  “Then I don’t see a problem with you staying here.”

“I miss you.”

She closed her eyes and leaned up, pressing soft lips against his scarred forehead.  “I miss you, too.  But that’s gonna make it so much better when we see each other again.”

Nick didn’t know what to say to that, so he didn’t say anything.  He curled up beside his wife and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, holding on tight, like he might make her leave.
