Help me out on this one.

Ok, I just thought of this and I need to know if anyone else has heard a story even remotely like this.
When I was little, I was asking my dad about fingerprints and he said they learned how to get fingerprints at crime scenes in the Old West, and they started arresting all these bad cowboys (or something) based of their fingerprints. There was one cowboy who thought he was all clever and he had his finger tips sliced off so he couldn't leave prints, but the good guys figured out it was him because he was the only thief who DIDN'T leave prints. I took this tale to be fact, but upong retrospect it doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Is this from a movie? Or a combination of some stories? Or was there some outlaw without fingertips and my dad just wanted to relate it to my fingerprints questions?
I don't know why I was thinking about this today, but the idea of a cowboy bandit with bloody fingers robbing banks stuck in my head for a long time.
