I saw Beck at Roy Wilkins on Monday. I must say it was the most sub par of the six shows I've seen, but it was still fun. He surprised us all with several selections from Odelay and Mellowgold, which was nice (he did "Truck Driving Neighbor Downstairs!"). He did this acoustic medley thingy during which his band sat at a table and ate dinner, but then they accompanied him by tapping the glassware and the table with their forks and knives. The table sounds were amplified, and one song was done with only this make-shift percussion as accompaniment. Also, during the now-obligatory "Nobody's Fault"-played-with-hand-pumped-organ-thingy, the band did this llittle stompy-clappy business that was very nice. Apparently Beck threw out his shoulder recently, so there was very little dancing from him, but there was a Dancing Guy, who really rocked and kept up an amazing energy throughout the show. I enjoyed the new stuff I heard and basked in the old familiar. He opened with "Devil's Haircut!" And did "Novocaine!" I don't even recall hearing that when I saw him on the Odelay tour. Very nice.
And during "Where It's At" a giant boom box descended from the heavens. That was coo'.
