Last night an article from The Independent of a protest in Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire, was brought to my attention by a Twitter friend of mine. What the town is doing is simply brilliant: “
Library emptied in bid to fight closure”.
There are campaigns going on across the UK right now in an effort to save funding cuts to public libraries, and hopefully prevent library closures. The Independent put another pretty good article up this morning, which has a cracking response to it in the comments: "
Overdue! The fight to save our libraries begins."
Libraries are important places in communities; they are not just about books. They provide essential services, and a social function that allows a population to develop and thrive. This is especially important in relation to those in the community who may have less opportunity. Personally, I use my local library for the book collections, the local archives, the generally sanctuary of the place, and I have visited exhibitions too. I know some little people who get great pleasure from the kids' workshops, and reading events that they hold; I know some older folk who enjoy the social aspect, and access to the computers; and I know they run reading groups and a whole manner or other services... Surely they are more important than ever in times of a recession?!
It is important for future generations that we fight.
