For _phantom_

Pairing: John/Aeryn
Prompt: Rain

John stopped as he realised Aeryn was no longer at his side. Spinning around he spotted her a few minutes behind him, standing and staring up at the rain falling from above. He ran back to her and grabbed her arm.

“What is it about ‘run’ that you don’t understand?” he muttered, pulling her after him.

“Let go of me,” she pulled her arm away, glaring at him briefly but following him through the rainforest.

“What is it that fascinates you about rain anyway?” he asked.

“What is it that fascinates you about living spaceships and people who look different from you?” she shot back.

If he hadn’t been running he would have shrugged. Ok he got it, to her rain was as fascinating as aliens were to him. And he guessed it was rather strange, water falling from the sky in droplets.

“Fine, whatever you say oh wise one,” he muttered.

Suddenly hearing footsteps behind him he jumped into the nearest clump of bushes, pulling Aeryn with him and ducked. She tried to say something and he clamped his hand over her mouth.

“Ssh…” he whispered.

Legs passed by in front of them. And then they were gone.

Aeryn bit his hand.

“Jesus…” he said, pulling it away. “I was just trying to save your life.”

“There was only two of them we could’ve shot them,” she replied, but she didn’t sound so angry.

John suddenly noticed exactly how close they were to each other, the rain drenching the both of them. If he hadn’t known any better he thought he might have kissed her at that moment. But being Aeryn that was always a dangerous decision to make.

She closed her eyes and stood up. “Lets go.”

And with that they were running again.

And...

Spoilers: Up to 2x16: Chicago

She glanced at him sitting next to her. He was staring out the window, his eyes focused on something in the distance - and it wasn’t a visible object. She wondered what he was concentrating on so intensely. With Michael it was impossible to tell.

She turned back to stare out the window, wherever she looked she was just trying her hardest not to look at Kellerman. She hated him, and she hated herself because she’d tried to kill him. Looking at him made her feel angry but it also made her feel guilty.

There was almost complete silence in the car as it rolled towards Chicago. Back to where it had all started. Kellerman had given up talking as every time he had both Linc and Michael had glared at him, or cut him off. And the two brothers weren’t the most talkative people around. Not that she was particularly in the mood for talking.

Again she looked at Michael. Had he understood? She’d tried her hardest to tell him she loved him, but she hadn’t been able to say the words. She wasn’t used to admitting feelings of any sort, in fact she couldn’t remember ever having uttered the words ‘I love you’ in anything more than a joking manner.

She closed her eyes, trying to replay every moment of that bathroom, to capture it and not let it go. There were so few moments in her life that she could close her eyes and replay them and feel happy, but that was one of them.

Her eyes snapped open as she felt a hand lightly touch hers. Her instincts instantly told her there was danger, but her mind cut them off fast enough, reminding her the only person within touching distance was Michael.

He was almost smiling, but not quite. She knew it would be a long time before she saw another smile like the one she’d received at the train station. Things weren’t going to be easy from here on.

He didn’t say anything, but she took comfort in the fact his hand was placed on top of hers. She turned hers around, palm facing up, and wrapped her fingers around his hand, before turning around and looking back out the window.

As they came over the next hill Chicago’s outline sat on the horizon.

And she wasn’t entirely sure she wanted to go back.

He squeezed her hand and she looked back at him.

“You’ll be fine,” he said quietly.

She nodded slightly and squeezed it back. “If you say so.”
