Vacation

Happy 2010! It's day one back at work after two weeks, the longest vacation I've had since college days.

Week one of vacation was much like the usual holiday regimen--- non-stop, busy days filled with festivities and family. It was a wnderful Christmas, probably the best yet in memory.

But week two was a week filled with empty days where I got to choose what I wanted to do. I decided to accomplish several projects I'd wanted to do for a long time. I woke up each morning as Scott was getting ready for work, and I'd set out to work on something on the house. I deep cleaned the house and cleaned and organized a ton. I got into our bedroom closet, which I have NEVER really organized and still had boxes in it from moving. I cleaned out the bathroom drawers and cabinets, as well as the kitchen pantry and the fridge. I threw away three contractor sized trash bags of junk.

I also did some much wanted gardening. I raked the last of the fallen leaves, cut away the tops of the dead lantana and chrysanthemums, gave the fountain grass a buzz cut, tilled the bedding soil and pulled up the unbelievably early weeds: henbit, clover, and nettles.

I also treated myself to some bulbs. Lowe's had bags of spring bulbs for just a buck a piece, so I planted over 100 bulbs: daffodils, freesia, Dutch iris, hyacinth and calla lily. I planted so many out of just plain experimentation: the only bulbs I've grown have been stargazers, which are a summer flower. I have no idea what will come up in the spring. They were cheap enough, so let's find out.

For Christmas, my mother gave me $50 to Marshall Grain. I'm excited about the possibilities, but don't quite know yet what I'll get from there. One of my goals is to dig some beds in the backyard, since everything I plant has been in the front yard. I would love a a few oleanders, azalea bushes, and some light pink crape myrtles. In the meantime, my side bed needs some shrubs, so Jenn's checking on getting me some Hawthornes from her company at-cost.

So better get back to work now that I'm back.... I have a feeling it's going to be a busy month!
