It's been a while since I've shed an actual tear, but I've recently taken to having these 30 second semi-crying spells where it's oh-so-close to happening. Then I'm over it and I'm amused with myself. Let's talk about something else.
Six things we learned watching MTV2 this weekend.
1. I miss videos!
2. I want John Mayer's "Wonderland" girlfriend. A lot. He's a funny-looking guy, that John Mayer. Close to being good-looking, but something's not quite right.
3. "Die Another Day" is the least Bond-like of all the Bond songs. But I do like it. And the video may be Madonna's best since "Bedtime Story." A pity that I never saw "Nothing Really Matters" except for bits n' pieces.
4. Tori's video for "a sorta fairytale" is trite, but cute with the whole 'lean on me/help me up/parts become whole' motiff. Hard to believe, but this is the first video I've seen of hers since "Spark." I'd seek them out more if she were more involved, but alas, video is a director's medium.
5. Missy Elliot is nuts! I was impressed with her stuff from last year. This year I just might hop on her bandwagon.
6. I hate buying Best of cd's for that one new song, but "Electrical Storm" (and the bonus disc of b-sides) will make the new U2 collection a must-buy.
Speaking of must-buy, I need to see if the upcoming Essential Santana is remastered. Thank you for reminding me. "Shaman" comes out on Tuesday and I just found out one of the songs features Seal. Please tour together, please tour together.
And finally, if I may be
Lordy, how I hate music nazis. Passion and opinions are fine. (I express mine all the dame time.) BUT when a person takes on this holier-than-thou attitude where only they know what true art is, it makes me want to wretch. May they get the worst song EVER stuck in their heads until it drives them insane. (I'm thinking the Westlife version of "Uptown Girl.") We all know there is a difference between disposable pop music and art, but it's not a huge one. It's pretty obvious who's in it for the money & the fame and who isn't, and really I'm not sure that's even up to me to decide. Tastes differ. And they change. Some artists deserve more than the cold shoulder. Remember what brought you here in the first place. Just because This doesn't stand up to That or This doesn't affect me like That once did, it does not give me the right to be disrespectful and forget what made me enjoy them in the first place. If you think you're too good for the journey, this is where you get off. Just spare me the "true" fan nonsense. You are fairweather. Either appreciate the beauty that's been offered you or go about your merry way.
Ahhh, now I feel better. Well, not really. But you know.
