I jusgt read an article in the NY Times magazine about how aerobic exercise - especially the kind that makes you huff and puff - increases brain function (or at least it does for lab rats). My son has been running with Special Olympics, doing 5-6 miles 3 times a week. He looks like he's floating when he runs, and doesn't seem to break a sweat, but he must be getting a workout. I've noticed that for the past couple of weeks he's been calmer, more focused, and seems to have more interest in things around him. We went to an exhibit of Ansel Adams and Geogia O'Keefe at the SFMOMA a few weeks ago, and he actually appeared to be interested in the pictures and photographs there. He even managed to sit pretty calmly for 2 hours of Rosh Hashannah services - about half of which was in a language he doesn't understand. Could it be the running? Should I pick up the pace of my old-lady shuffle and get a little more aerobic benefit myself?
