Kaito was very much aware that little Conan Edogawa's birthday was soon. Everyone else on the island probably thought the miniature detective was turning eight. Kaito couldn't prevent a smug smile from curling at the corners of his mouth. He was probably the only one who knew the truth.

Well, he and Hattori, of course.

He had prepared a birthday present for Conan beforehand. Back when he had raided Conan's room, he had found that picture frame with a photo of Ran in it. While the little detective was sleeping, he had sneaked into his dorm room and stolen it for prank purposes. Now, the picture frame was submerged into a bucket of jello! (Covered by a plastic bag to prevent the gooey substance from damaging it, of course). He had wrapped the bucket in wrapping paper and planned on giving it to Conan as soon as he found him.

The weather was nice today. Not too cold, and not too hot. The perfect day for a beach party. The thief whistled a tune to himself as he strolled along the shore, Conan's present tucked neatly underneath his arm as he searched not only for Conan, but for the other two birthday girls as well.

Risa was the first to see him and she'd be ashamed if she didn't introduce herself. Something about him seemed familiar but she couldn't quite place it. Maybe he was that new boy she'd talked to about being his magic show assistant?

"Hi!" Risa waved as she moved over, the light breeze playing with the hem of her white dress. "I'm Risa, birthday girl number one!" She refused to acknowledge that Riku actually came first by like...a whole minute or something. Who cared?

Kaito stopped walking and waved at Risa. "Hey!" he said with a charming, patented Kuroba smile, "Kaito Kuroba! I think we've met over the network!"

He peered at the girl curiously, before snapping his fingers. "You're the one who said she wanted to help me with my magic show!"

"Yes! This is one third my birthday party!" She smiled at him, brushing her hair back. Maybe she had a thing for thieves, but Risa couldn't help but notice that this boy was cute. Not as cute as Dark, but Dark wasn't here and didn't even say goodbye to her...

"How old are you, anyway?" She asked, knowing that Dark always thought it was better for her to be with around people her own age. "Just....I'm curious."

Kaito tapped his cheek with his finger, before he held out his free hand, flicked his wrist and produced a lovely yellow rose out of thin air. It was his trademark trick, and his standard greeting whenever he came across a cute female.

"17," he said with a wink, "But I think your age is more important here, since it's your birthday. How old are you turning~?"

Risa felt her heart flutter. This was the first guy who'd really shown any interest at all in her since Dark....and, oddly enough, she didn't even have to plead for the present or his time. Not that she really had to with Dark, but it was nice to have him present her with a flower before she expect him to. Taking the rose gently in her hand, she smiled and sniffled at it, her eyes sparkling. "Oh, thank you! This is lovely! I never get flowers!"

Obviously, she was really touched by his action. Who knew? Maybe there was something about this Katio worth getting to know. "Oh, me? Sixteen." She said, brushing a piece of hair behind her ear. "Sweet sixteen! My twin isn't so happy about it but I don't care. I love birthdays."

"Never?" Kaito asked in faux shock, "Every girl needs to be given a flower in her lifetimes! It's like a right of passage!" He was, of course, teasing her, but at the same time he honestly believed that statement to be true. For being such a pervert who flipped skirts and sneaked into the girl's locker room on a regular basis, he could be rather charming when he wanted to be.

"You two chose a good day for your birthday party," he said insistently as he gestured to the beach and everyone crowding around it. "Not too bad for a sixteenth."

At least Risa thought he was funny. She giggled a little, something musical and light, and moved to break the stem of the rose just enough so that she could put it on her hair. While he was talking, she'd manage to remove the thorns and was now securing the rose with a ribbon. "Well, maybe you'll just have to give me a few more?" She was surprised to hear herself say it and covered her shock with a smile. "And now I can't say I was never given a flower, right?"

"It's turned out really well! I don't even think everyone is here yet! It's so nice that they've all come out. It's not a party without friends!" She could tell that he might be looking for others but she would rather have him stay and at least talk with her for a bit.

"I--" Kaito blinked at Risa for a few moments, before he diverted his gaze and coughed lightly, trying his best to cover up a light blush that had suddenly appeared on his cheeks. It was odd, Kaito didn't blush often, and usually when he did Aoko was the one causing it. He reached up and grabbed the brim of his baseball cap for a moment, before he pulled it off his head and turned back to Risa, a wide and confident grin stretching across his face. He placed Conan's gift on the ground.

"You want to see a small sample of what kind of magic I can do?" he asked cheerfully, thankful for the opportunity to show off.

"Yes!" The girl exclaimed with happiness sparking in her brown eyes. This place had gotten so boring after the strain of people leaving. It was nice to have new cute boys back. "I'd love to see some!" She folded her hands in front of her and stood, letting the light night breeze float the hem of her skirt around her thighs.

She watched the hat with interest, finding it confusing but humorous that he was using a baseball cap and not a top hat.

Kaito was a skilled magician, and he was good at impromptu. A top hat would have been more ideal, but a baseball cap would do.

He held the hat out in front of him and turned it inside out to show Risa that there was nothing inside. When he was done, he held his hand above his head and shook it for a moment, before he reached inside the cap and pulled out three multicolored juggling balls from seemingly nowhere. He replaced his hat on his head and began juggling them effortlessly. "And that's just the beginning!" he said.

Risa stared, transfixed by his talent. She took in the fact that there was nothing inside the hat and watched Kaito with expectant eyes that grew wide when the juggling balls appeared. "Wow! Kaito! You're so good at this!"

But what was coming up? He said he had more to show her but...what could that possibly be? If he pulled a rabbit out of that hat, she swore she'd steal it and keep it as her own pet. "You even know how to juggle! I have no hand-eye coordination..." Maybe that was why Dark never wanted her as his assistant thief....

"You have to have good hand-eye coordination when you're a magician!" And a thief, he added mentally. There was no point in letting her know that he used his skills in deception for more than just his magic tricks, after all.

He continued to juggle for a moment longer, before he tossed all three balls high in to the air. With a quick snap of his fingers and another puff of smoke, all three of them turned into three snow-white doves. Two of them landed gracefully on Kaito's head, while the third fluttered over to Risa.

"Will you teach me to juggle sometime?" She asked, fully enthralled by just watching the way he handled the three juggling balls. It looked so complicated!

But she gave an audible gasp as the poof happened and laughed when the bird came toward her. "Awwe! Look! It's so beautiful!" She held her hand out for it to perch on and smiled. "Wow....She's so pretty!" She lifted a hand to tentatively stroke at her head, soft and gently, as she cooed to the little bird.

"Sure," Kaito answered. Juggling looked complicated, but it really wasn't once you knew how. He reached up and gently picked up one of the birds off of his head. "That one's Komi-chan," he said, using his head to gesture towards the one that Risa was cooing over, "She's the first bird I ever owned and trained myself!"

"She's darling," Risa smiled at Kaito from her spot behind the little dove. "What are the other two?" She asked as she searched around for something to give them. "I don't have a treat for them...do you have special treats?" Cute and talented? She'd been there before but she couldn't help going back to the same kind of guy.
