When: Halloween night, ten o' clock.
Where: The basketball courts.
What: For the half of the party taking place in the gymnasium.

The gymnasium is chased in a flitting half-light, the dance floors spotted with dancing spotlights and everywhere else with orange and yellow lamps, both on floor and ceiling, casting odd shadows everywhere. Food tables are lined up along one wall, groaning under the weight of pumpkin pie, soul cakes, blood pudding, skinned grapes, and bowl after bowl of every kind of candy you can think of. Drink tables line another wall, sporting spiced cider predominantly, and every other type of alcohol or juice in varying amounts. The band is something out of a Tim Burton movie, skeletal-thin and dressed in matching pinstripe suits, playing everything from swing to hiphop to round dances and folk music. Jack o' lanterns invade all surfaces, and two particularly forbidding carved faces guard each of the gyms' entrances, crowned with dripping black spire candles that seem unaffected by the wind.
The decorations are attractive, but not noteworthy. All doors are open to the night, and all the night is welcome to the dance. But keep an eye on the skull-set clock on the wall, for you never know what might happen when midnight rolls around on the day of the dead.
