Mama often left him alone in his rooms for hours, alone with his books and his plush and china companions. He kept himself busy, reading stories and losing himself in them, or making up stories from the adventures of his toys.
At least the servants tended to him, feeding and bathing him, helping him change his clothes. The butler's son, Sakaki, cared more about his master's grandson than the boy's own father or mother.
The rare times his mother paid heed to her son, Kazu-kun could expect to find some beloved toy or book had vanished in the night afterward...
