They hit the beach in the late afternoon, when the sun dips behind the hotels and tourist traps, when the crowd starts to diminish. He’s self-conscious, wearing a bathing suit: he worries he looks too thin. Aramat assures him that he looks fine, though she wonders if the newer styles look right on her. He returns the assurance with an affectionate smile.
At one point, he swims to an island some ways offshore, she riding him like Europa on the bull, to a picnic awaiting them on a flat rock, the sky a dome of gold and blue above them.
