Veronica with her nutcracker, Monique with her blue riding habit. Teddy, the bear which Grandfather brought from England, with a plush donkey named Eeyore. A book of faery tales, well-thumbed, the edges of the pages like velvet. A violet parasol he carried on the brightest days. Annette, the doll he had found fallen from Mama's collection, her face cracked.
He had caressed her face, taken her up, clasped her gently, whispered to her. "Don't worry, I'll be a doctor like Papa and Grandfather and make you all better."
Not long after, Annette vanished from his shelves... then Teddy. Then more...
