Michigan Tech... fucking over its students since 1885
This is for all those Michigan Tech alumnus or students that read my LJ whenever I decide to post... others might be interested but, eh.
So I got a wonderful phonecall at lunch today. It was Gwen and she was crying. Michigan Tech, in all its wisdom, had decided to let her know that she was being put on Academic Suspension.
eh? Wait. Didn't she just get the letter for probation in May? Why yes! Yes she did. So what happened? The thing is, we don't know. Granted, her first year up there wasn't very strong but it wasn't enough to let her go. She had a 2.07 the first semester and somewhere around a 1.15 the second semester. Yes, the grades weren't good, but by university policy, she'd be put on academic probation after that spring.
She took 5 credits of Track B courses this summer and didn't earn anything less than an AB. Yet, as the summer semester ended, she got the notice in her email.
So with her upset over it and asking why in the hell she got the email, I advised her to talk to the advisor of her department and tell her the story. Told her to call and to email to get the point across. The advisor was out until 3:30 today, but as soon as she got in, 10 minutes later there was an email in her inbox saying that she was looking into it. Got her to calm down somewhat and to give her a direction to go in but...
This is just fucked up. What the hell is going on at MTU? Talk about one big screwup! I'm curious to see how they plan to weasel their way out of this one or if it's going to be just a "Oops. Our bad. You're enrolled!"
Fuck, students should get compensation for this bullshit...
