A Puzzlement

In looking over my first week of being on Facebook (and Google+), I discovered a few things:
  • I still keep my hobbies/activities close to my vest.  Unlike my wife, who spent over an hour that first night on Facebook IM-ing with an old friend from high school, I've kept my involvement with FB to a minimum.  I friend people, I read other people's ( Read more... )

Facebook is all-consuming at first. Old friends finding you, other online friends hooking in, you doing the same. It's a flurry of activity, keeping up, feeling your way--and then you realize you really DON'T need to know what you ex-squaredancing partner from seventh grade is thinking while watching his neighbor through his binoculars (because he just KNOWS she is a stripper he once dated in college) and you let FB fade into an occasional scan while taking a break from the day.

I was on FB shortly after I was on LJ and G+ wasn't around back then. Now that G+ is here, mostly I ignore FB these days and let the occasional tweet copy over. My mom is here or we 'talk' over IM to save the phone bill.
I like G+ because you can follow whomever you like without having to worry about the reciprocating. For outbound, you have choices - levels of circles to put people into. For instance, I have very few 'Friends' on G+, a few 'Acquaintances', almost no 'Family' since they haven't joined and most are in circles I made up as to where I 'know' these people from, or if famous/well-known, just in the 'Following'. I can post to just my Con circle or my Artists circle, etc.
Anything like the GSUSA stuff, I post Public.
Stuff that's somewhat personal, like the job interview, I post to Extended Circles.
I should start posting _here_ more often...

Facebook has added that ability. However I wouldn't trust any post to be made to "dancing in the moonlight buddies" to not get opened up to "My career contact list".

I prefer google+, though I'm suspicious of their motives, however the app google did for the ipad sucks. And if I just try to view it as a website, it won't let me, sending me only to a bare bones mobile version with no features. shrug.

I'm keeping away from social media and writing more. Many of the people I liked reading and connecting with don't post much anymore. Oh well, best for my writing, right?

And I, too, always dither about should I add someone.
