The kingdom of Valentine was gone. It was hard to believe that the once prosperous nation could be reduced to ashes in what seems like just hours. The country along with any trace of human civilization--buildings, agriculture had been vanquished in one night, leaving only a grim dead land behind in its wake.

Those who had been fortunate enough to escape the pooka’s curse that swept across the land like a plague had hurriedly fled to other nations, pledging their undying loyalty to the kings and hoping to put any past connection to Valentine to rest. It was to say that this few people were able to return their lives back to relative normalcy, but for the two surviving heirs of Valentine that hope of security was un-reachable.

They no longer had a place to call home, and they knew aligning themselves with other kingdoms just to obtain a home was something equivalent to betrayal. For if they did give in to temptation and do such a thing, then they would be forsaking their heritage, disgracing their fallen kingdom. And who was to say that the other kingdoms would accept them with open arms.

It had not been long ago that Valentine had been at war with Ragnanival in the north and Titania to the east--nearly wiping out these nations from existence.

Those countries were only beginning to recover from the massive damage dealt to them, and most likely held bitter feelings for Valentine--perhaps even feeling grateful that the kingdom had met its demise. If the heirs even held the audacity to show up on this nation’s door steps with a plea for help--then they might have well been digging their own graves. Who in their right mind would help the grand children of such a crazed man who had done nothing but inflict damage to their kingdom?--the answer was absolutely no one.

This is why they had no choose but to seek refuge in the Forest of Elrit--carefully cloaking their bodies so no one would recognize who they truly were, they didn‘t wish to be killed just yet. The challenge however of living in such a way had drained them both mentally and physically--but was not something they could not endure.

Spending years locked up within the castle being tortured by their grandfather’s cruel hand had in a way prepared them for life many challenges. So now instead of succumbing to their internal sadness, they strived to move forward by treating the recent events in their lives has nothing but a phase that would sure pass.

“We no longer have a home, Ingway.” Velvet states, a deep feeling of sadness sweeping through her frame as she says this words, but she does her best to rein in her negative emotions. Now that they had settled down and ceased their running, everything that had happened was slowly beginning to set in and become real. Ingway remains silent, head lowered in deep contemplation as he allows himself to lean against the sturdy tree behind him--sighing heavily. Velvet notices her brother’s hesitation to speak and watches him carefully out of the corner of her eye.

She knows that Ingway does not share her feelings of sadness, instead his ill-lighted eyes are only filled with anger, disgust--almost vengeful in their appearance. This does nothing but confuse her, but she decides to not question her brother about this. Along as he was here with her--standing by her side then she felt as if she could live. Velvet up until this moment only lived to protect and be with Ingway, there was no other in her heart or mind.

And the feeling was quite mutual on her brother’s part, for Ingway knew that there was nothing that would stop him from keeping his dear beloved sister safe. And for his past crimes against his own kingdom--and being such a fool and coward during the time Velvet really needed him only fueled this desire--so much so that he wouldn’t hesitate to give up his life for her.

That was why he slowly pulled away from the tree and approached his sister, a look of determination set on his face. Velvet looked slightly startled as her brother took her hand, squeezing it in a reassuring way. This display of affections was quite common between them, since they constantly spent their time huddled up anyway.

“It is true Velvet, we no longer have a home. But we do not need the security of a fortress to keep us safe--as long as we have each other then that shall be enough.” Ingway eyes bore into her own, before he looks away not once relinquishing in hold on her hand. There is a long drawn out silence and then without warning Velvet clutches his hand, causing a smile to break out on Ingway’s half covered face.

“Yes,” she agrees, looking down at the ground. “As long as we have each other, then we are at home.”

Ending Notes First fic that contains either Ingway or Velet, hopefully they are written well in character. Comments are much appreciated.
