The first thing he notices about her is the lack of glasses. Geniuses are supposed to wear glasses. That’s common sense. He wonders if she’s wearing lenses.

The second thing he notices about her is that she certainly won’t last a month on the island. She’s shy, thin and afraid. She will be an outsider. She will beg to go back to her ordinary life. He knows she will. He has seen that before.

The third thing he notices about her are her breasts.

The fourth thing he notices about her is that she, being a genius, obviously loves the lab. Their problem is not a sociological disaster, it’s a challenge she needs to overcome. Not for them; it’s for her personal pleasure at finding the answers.

The fifth thing he notices about her is that when those answers don’t seem to ever come around, her eyes eventually stop shining and she retreats into the frightened kitten again.

The sixth thing he notices about her is that she has no idea what sex is really about. Her excuse is that she was married and he wasn’t exactly brilliant.

The seventh thing he notices about her - as he sees her showing up at the lab with her blonde hair straightened and a seductive smile - is that he might have created a monster.

The eighth thing he notices about her is that he likes too much being with her.

The ninth thing he notices about her is that she might like being with him, too, but she wouldn’t even take the time to say goodbye before jumping on the sub back home.

The tenth thing he notices about her is that it’ll hurt when she’s gone. So he’s secretly thankful that Ben is going to break her again and again, even though it makes him feel guilty when she’s crying in his arms.

The eleventh thing he notices about her is that maybe, maybe, they could have been together a little longer than initially planned. That it could have become something a bit more serious, a bit more official. That maybe he could have moved in, maybe they could have shared a few more ice creams in bed. That maybe he should have told her that yes, he loved her, and it was okay if she didn’t feel the same, it wouldn’t change anything. He always knew he wasn’t her Romeo.

The last thing he notices about her is that she would have taken the time to say goodbye. But in the end, it was he who left her in a hurry, with only a meaningful glance and the promise of no return.
