He would not cry for Astinos any more than he would cry for the other Spartan men killed that morning. So he would not shed a single tear.
Because Stelos was one of the bravest Sparta had seen. Because they came to Thermopylae with the purpose of earning their deaths. Because he was not Astinos’ father, and for that he had no reason to love him more than any of his brothers-in-arms.
And yet, blood would taste bitterer on the following attack, when he danced with his sword over Astinos’ deathbed.
He would blame the Persians. He would not cry.
