Love (luhv), n. (Middle English, from Old English lufu)
- A deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness.
- A feeling of intense desire and attraction toward a person with whom one is disposed to make a pair; the emotion of sex and romance.
- An intense emotional attachment
Despite my obsession with words I don't think I've ever really gotten down and dirty with the word "love" before. Felt it, sure! Obsessed about the feeling - HELL yes! But never really explored the word itself.
It's possibly the most misused four-letter word out there. We use it flippantly, carelessly. We brandish it as a weapon. We toss it around like candy, often without realising the full impact. We love our: shoes, nail polish, TIVO, WII....as well as actual real live "Hoomin Beans".
Is this why, when we actually experience love, the word itself sometimes seems completely inadequate? Sometimes it just seems...well, a bit pants. It's meant to express how we feel, but sometimes it just doesn't quite do it.
I think I should start using other words to express these thoughts and feelings .
"I flibbertygibbet you!"
"Let's make flibbertygibbet!"
Ok, that one isn't such a good idea. Hmmm.
"I jabberwocky you!"
"Let's make jabberwocky!" ***
Darn, the only one I can think of that makes even the slightest bit of sense probably only does so to a handful of other people. What fun though!
"I squee you!"
"Let's make squee!".
Ok, yep, I'm diggin' that one right there.
Love? Are ya reading this? I squee you!
Squee!
*** with full apologies to Lewis Carroll's family. Don't sue me please! I'm broke!
